last night the car yard that had the P38 I liked asked me to bring the Disco in so they could value it to trade in on the Range Rover. ( I wasnt convinced weather I wanted it). Any way I recon its worth $10000 as a trade in. My Disco is a 1997 Es with every option available. its done 155000 and the body work and interiour are excelant. The car is in excelent condition. I bouht it 8 months ago for $14500.
So I look around the yard and he has three discos there all are above $12000.
The head salesman says what do want for it? $10000 I say is a fair price I think. He says he miles away $5000 was the most its worth. WTF I think .
I said mate your on drugs that cars worth $10000 all day as a trade I want to trade it in not ****ing give it away. He says but is a v8 and no one will buy v8 now. Ok so Why is it im looking at buying a v8 Range Rover off You? well they are hard to sell. Youve got three Discos in the yard and one says 14999 cost price!! he says buts its a TDI. I says yse buts its 1 year older has 205000 klms on it and its just a standard trim. !! mate your car is worth $5000 to me Ysterday I bought.... I said dont give me the standard car yard ***** about buying this that and the other, I used to work n a car yard i know your tactics and there is no way you could buy this car from the auction for that, mate keep your range rover buy the way its got liner problumes anyway so I dont want it!

So he's a shark simply because he thinks your cars worth less then you do?
Is'nt that how his business works?
can't stand used car salesman myself either, but he's there to make money, simple as that.
Sell your car privately if that's what you think it's worth.

Your looking at buying a P38, obviously you can afford to burn money. Of course he's going to try and pull the wool over your eyes, and get the most profit out of you.

Regrettably, that is about what they are worth as a trade-in.
Your best option is to sell privately.
I was talking to a dealer last week who ssaw an L322 Rangie with 30,000km on the clock for about $50,000.
It was out of warranty so the car sales yards didn't want it.

When I was looking at a used Defender Td5 four and a bit years ago the salesman asked if I wanted to trade my 300Tdi Disco on it and I said "NO",I'll sell it privately".
Went for a ride in the Defender, got back to the yard and his 'orrible boss whispered something to him and and he turned to me and said "Give you 12 grand for it".
They won't take no for an answer salesmen that's why they are what they are.
I didn't buy his vehicle, bought a new one for about 6 grand more and flogged my Disco for 20 grand.
And then he accused me of being "unprincipled"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2013/09/470.jpghttps://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2013/09/470.jpg

Hmmm, no offence folks but isn’t all this a little naïve? Forget the industry, a business is out to maximize its profits, if you can buy or make something for a $1 and sell it for $3, kudo’s to you. If you buy a burger for $3 and it cost $.20 are we up in arms over it……..unlikely. Of course a dealer in this case is going to offer bottom dollar, moreso on older vehicles, so they can maximize their return plus cover their oncosts. Pretty simple really. Just like if you choose to sell it privately, your not out to sell it at a loss, you are out to maximize your $$$, so why do people have a hissy fit when it is reversed? If you want to get best dollar you sell it privately as a general rule. Also there is good and not so good in any industry whether buying a car or getting a cup of coffee. When I was looking to sell my D3, I had more than one dealer tell me to sell it privately as they couldn’t get what I wanted for it. I pretty much knew that but it was worth a shot to get a guage. If taking a car yard as an example, the price they buy ones vehicle for then has overheads attached to it eg leasing the yard, staff wages, phone calls, insurance, commissions, plus profit. IF you sell it yourself you aren’t incurring the costs of running a business and hence sell at a higher price privately. Sorry but just annoys me when people don’t get their way with a particular industry that therefore the whole industry must be slated. For the record……..I have never sold a car in my life, however I have owned/ run businesses, so have an understanding of how a business operates, but can also understand why people get upset when they don’t get what they want,

Got to say as nice as a 97 ES V8 is, I would only offer a car yard about $8k max, there are heaps of 97tdis around at present for around $10k.
It is not fair or nice, but trade in unless you are buying a $50k plus vehicle is bugger all especially on a V8 Disco.
Personally I would keep it as a comp/beach/ hard work vehicle with that trade in. You could try privately to sell it for $10k. At a $5k trade in you would probablly be better off asking for a cash price for the P38, get them to drop then sell the Disco privately and you may come close to your $10k.
I know I am not impressed what my insurance company want to insure my 2000 defender for $22k with $12k worth of accessories.
I found with my 84 Rangie was better to sell it private and offer a cash deal for the Fender.

Yep human nature I surpose, when we buy something we want to steel it and when we sell something we want as much as we can get for it if not more than its worth.

The only reason you would trade a vehicle is for convenience. If you want to get anywhere near what you think it is worth then sell it privately.
When looking for my Disco1 I looked at a top of the line 1996 model V8 with a rear air locker, ARB sliders, ARB bullbar, HR towbar and electric brake controller, 2in lift. It was being sold by a family man accountant type who had it to tow his camper. Had about 150k on it.
It seemed to be in pretty good nic except for rust in the alpine windows.
He was asking $12k which I turned down as I wanted a base model. This was about 12 months ago.
The dealer is right. V8 Disco1s aren't worth squat.

I looked at shifting over to an oiler at one stage & one particular yard offered $5k for my V8 with under 140k on it, compared to the $10k they wanted for a 3yr older 200tdi with just shy of 300k and in shabby condition.
That's just how it works.
As another option; the last bike I sold wasn't getting any bites after a couple of mths from several ads I'd placed, it really needed exposure to capture someone's interest. I put it in a busy shop on consignment and it sold in a bit over a week. I paid a small fee but still got $ that I was happy with for it.

One of the things people modifying vehicles need to understand is that the modifications are never going to increase the value of the vehicle by anything close to what they cost. In fact, in many cases they will reduce the value of the vehicle, the only exception being when the modification is something the buyer wants. But unless it is a common mod such as a bullbar, don't count on that person being looking for a vehicle when you are selling!

Sadly the dealers know that they have something we want and also that we want to sell something that we don't want.
That's why used car sales people don't have too many friends outside of their industry.

I spent a couple of weeks hunting high and low for a Tdi Disco any year any price up to $12000 could not find one for love nor money. Only found one or two and they were manual and asking ridiculus money ( i wanted an auto)
Loads and loads of V8 but the 300 Tdi is few and far between .
Hence why i bought Incisor Old Disco Great car and nice but did not like the colour but only one i could find

I think the jist of the post, in my mind, was how unashamed sales people are. I wanted to trade my Peugeot 307 in for a 2001 Td5 worth 27k, my car being only 2 years old, with 16k on the clock (worth 21k privatly sold) and the sales guy had the audacity to offer my 3k for the car, thats right, 3k!!!
So, naturally you think, these guys will loose more customers by insulting them than getting sales.
The other option is to get lpg on it, thats only a few gs investment and would be worth keeping.

Ain't that the truth. When I was selling my Disco a few years ago it had a few extras such as long range tank, 2" lift, OME suspension etc. Potential buyers were asking me if it had been off-road, course not!
One said he would only buy it if I replaced the LR tank with a standard one. :o

At least the Dealer was honest and said he would not offer anywhere near it's value. He even sujested selling private as the other yards would offer simmilar.

A couple of weeks looking??? C'mon that just shows lack of commitment :D
You are right though. When I was looking there would have been 10 V8s for sale for each Tdi. I never saw any Tdis for under $10k but have since.
That was looking in all the Eastern states too.

Im never intent on selling the Disco Im more than happy with it, Its just this particular car caught my eye. Im not gointg to sell the Disco Privatly or otherwise now. If the yard offered me a fair price I may well of gone ahead.A fair price would of beem around $8500 to $9500 for a trade in. Now even two other yards agree my car was worth around the $8500 mark as a trade so its not just me, this pr!k was just trying to rob me.The red book values it as a resale at $12500 so yes $8500 would of been fair.
AS I said I wasnt intent on selling the Disco anyway so Theres no way I would except such a low price.
The cars to good to use as a bush basher as some one put some where, its a standard car and has very limited off road use and is excellent condition.

so your not getting a P38?
I bought a $26K P38 from a LR dealer over 3 years ago and got $9K trade for my immaculate 88 classic, which I hear they sold later for 7. I was back at said dealer in April and the salesman said my "tired old range rover" was worth maybe $2K for a trade on a new disco3, I might get a bit more when I was ready to buy he said. He wasn't to happy when I said "thanks mate - will just go see the service guys and pickup my washer bottle grommit". Aparently its all because my cars a GEMS P38, doesn't have factory SATNAV, has a dent in the bonnet, and has over 125k on the odometer. How many 12 year old cars have done less than 125K's?????
Funny - that dealers only a dealer for another week ;)
I have no issue my car is not worth what I paid for it, but I know I could get mid teens for it and thus I would expect as a trade at least 2/3rds that, but hey they are out to make money and the next fool in line after me might say heck yeah give me that 2 grand for my car and be happy.

Nope Im not getting it. 3 Reasons: 1 the trade in offer was an insult they bang it up the Kiber pass. 2: The people in the know on this forum say dont go there and keep the Disco, I respect some one who owns a car and says dont buy one!. 3 The P38 had problumes the air suspention didnt work properly and it had a load ticking noise when it was started up.
adn 4 my Disco is a very good car and im still happy with it!

A guy at work traded his EF Fairmont Ghia on a 4.8 POOtrol.Paid top dollar, they gave him $2000 trade.
He wouldnt listen, told him keep the EF,negotiate a outright buy on the POOtrol, you will bargain them down a few extra grand, then you sell the falcoon privetely for $2000,you effectively get $4000 for the Falcoon.
Once you introduce a trade in you loose all your bartering advantage!!!!

LandyAndy is entirely right. If you must buy a car from a dealer, find the car, then buy it for cash money and haggle big time.
Remember, the longer the car has sat on the yard, the more it owes them.
Keep an eye out for fresh stock, then strike.
Once you've knocked off 25% of the asking price, and have settled on the deal, then sell off whatever, privately. Dealers dont really like trade-ins, they're just another problem.
Also, any used car from a dealer sells inclusive of 10% GST, so a $10,000 selling price is $9,000 (ish) to the dealer, as the GST goes to the tax office.
GST for some, is also a claim item, factor this in to the purchase price.

When we traded our Ford Probe on the Forester from Subaru Penrith (we had tried to sell the Probe privately - Ace considered it!), it didn't even get onto the lot. It was picked up and went to the wholesalers the same day.
It wasn't a car they'd sell even though it was in excellent condition.

When I was looking for a replacement for the stolen Subaru I had a request in with the local Subaru dealer to call me when they got in a Liberty wagon that was over ten years old. I called them more than once, and they were happy to take my name but I didn't ever get a call back.
I suggested that I was willing to pay cash and better than wholesale price, and willing to do this all same day.
I reckoned it was a great offer, they get a thousand up for no heavy lifting, and in cash.
cheers
