I know there will be multiple opinions on this but. When mating up a new water pump to the casing.

just paper gasket (surely thatl leak!)
paper gasket with appropriate sealant each side
just the sealant

once the radiator shop finds my radiator (good story that one) Ill be doing, rad, waterpump, thermostat, bolt up old disco alternator, finally finish off the air-con to air compressor (have all parts now) and pull the case to have a sticky at the timing belt...

anyway

I had a issue with water pumps at one time & replaced three in one year,

Used stag sealeant on both sides of gasket supplied & there was never a prob in that area;)

depends on what Ive got on hand when I do the job.....

I prefer to go hylomar on both sides (a sticky gasket goop about the consistancy of Hot honey when the goop is cold) of a paper gasket followed by a form-a-gasket type sealastick tailed a very poor 3rd by a gasket alone.

But make sure that your gasket isnt covered/impregnated with a pressure sensitive glue/goop (like the gaskets for a unimog air compressor) if youve gotten one of those numbers clean everything and install it by itself)

Opinion: Blue Hight temp silicon only.
Reason: I replaced a water pump last year and used the paper gasket - and for reasons unknown to me I cracked the bottom of the pump when tightening up (with a torque wrench) the fittings. I put the old one back on with the gasket and it did the same thing. A new pump without the gasket survives ok so far.

When you do replace the pump, you may as well do the p-gasket at the same time - since you disturb the fittings when doing the pump anyway.
