I am looking at a Discovery, 97 TDI and was looking for opinions on the relaiability of this engine. It is low kms, 130,000 and regularly serviced with no off road or towing. A Rover tech advised me to steer clear of the TDI for electrical problems, but there seems to be plenty of guys that use them off road.
Thanks,

The TDI was a generally mechanical engine no real electrickery problems, I traded mine in at 285000km and it was still going strong with no issues other than a couple of things wearing out. I found it to be the most reliable Landy I have owned, have not had the D3 long enough to rank it yet;)

Defender 300TDi @ 275k - no problems and going strong. Only ever had timing belts replaced at 100k intervals, oil every 5k, regular filters (oil 10k, air/fuel 20k), and periodic tappet adjustments. No electrical problems at all. Oil seals however are a different matter...

mine is 97 Tdi 205,000 K/m. Only problems it has had are problems I have caused
Maybe the rover tech meant steer clear of the TD5s rather than the older 300Tdi's?

I think I'd steer clear of that Rover tech! You'd be hard pushed to find any electrics on a TDi - that's why I bought one! :)

To sum up he talking out of his ar*e
There are no electrics on a 300 Tdi No engine of car managerment ones anyway.
The only electrics going to the engine are the heater plugs (Which you don't need anyway) the alternator, the injection pump, and the temp gauge. Thats it so what is he going on about. If you start a Tdi and take the battery off it will still run so it does not even rely on its electrics to run
He is getting confused with the range rover of the same year. Now there are the ones to steer clear of
The Tdi Disco are some of the most reliable cars that land rover have ever made

in theory if reasonabley looked after I see no reason why a tdi shouldnt make 500k km and more.
If treated like a golden child I reckon you could coax 1m Km out of one easily (esp if it was a wednesday morning build)

I'm actually struggling to find two circuits to put an immobiliser on that couldn't be got round with 2 wires and 60 secs under the bonnet. :D

I did wonder what the tech was on about.Anyway I took the plunge today and bought a 95 Discovery TDI, one owner from new with 140,000 kms and full service history. Really pleased with the deal and cant wait to get it off road.
