Hi
Need help with 2000 defender, burnt out light switch, fitted new switch now have parkers working but headlights only work on hi beam flash as before switch replacement. Have power out of headlight switch (blue wire) but no power coming in on blue wire to dip switch. Have no wiring diagram in my workshop manual. Where does blue wire go between light switch and dip switch? Have checked fuses and relay all seem ok, Any help greatly appreciated my only vehicle.

Which switch did you replace, the headlight or blinker/dip/flasher?
If they still use the same old crappy Lucas blinker/dip/flasher switch that many British manufacturers used, then it's probably melted, too.
Been there, done that with my Hillman - several times until I put relays in and replaced the switch with a Bosch unit from an XD (?) Ford Falcon.
I had to machine up a collar for it to work but work it did - for many years afterward.

I'll post the relevant pages of the wiring diagram - give me a few mins to dig them out.
I would recommend you get a RAVE CD from dave (incisor) in the markets section - I am sure he has one for the Defender - all the wiring diagrams are in there.
And you sure need them for LR's :D

Graham you can download the RAVE CD on the www or purchase it from the forum. This has the wiring diagrams on it.
The blue wire goes from the switch to a relay then to the dip switch.

When you look at the dipp switch it will be the outer blue wire. Found mine had worked loose. All it took was to tighten up the pin and reconnect. Main switch is just evil.

Thanks for all your help, drawing seems different, mine has 20 fuses in cab and 7 under drivers seat. The pin connection on dip switch seems tight just no power in wire, the relay I checked is one of 5 in cab under fuses but perhaps there is another relay I haven't found yet, thanks again

The fuses shown on the wiring diagrams are the one used for the lights.
The others are omitted from the diagram for clarity
Just look at the fuse numbers.

Hi there,
Don't go round in circles looking for a riddle. Remember that the ignition will have to be on to make heads work normally, whereas the highs can be flashed anytime. At least this is so on a Defender 300.
The ignition activated relay is away from the column. The feed from the headlight output of the main switch goes away to the relay and then comes back to the dipper.
I had the luck to lose one headlamp low beam, somewhere in the loom. Used the remaining good one to trigger a new separate relay up in the engine bay near the alternator. Fitted relays for high beam and drivers while I was there. The standard light switching is just too light for the load.
Even the rating for fuses and wiring for the parkers is too light. If towing things with more than two tail lights eg markers, consider a relay near the back. This will save the existing setup from failure. Same with stops, reverse lamps and flashers.

Also look at a headlight loom upgrade from drivesafe. Mine arrived Friday. Nothing scarier than losing headlights in the middle of the night on an open road. The switch should have been plug and play. As said headlights do not come on without ignition on, but you can flash high beam.

I was!! unaware the ignition had to be on for headlights so have troubled everyone for nothing and explains why fault could not be found, my humble appologies. Have ordered rave cd and relays for lights to ease pressure on switch and may try and fit relay to parkers too as suggested, 2 extra lights in bull bar and camper trailer has 4 lights they all add up. Also found globes in BB park lights/blinkers had been fitted a about 5w blinkers and 21w globes in park lights from purchase. Many thanks for all your help sorry to trouble you.

Ok, ignition on, Parker's work, high beam work when I pull back on the light switch and then headlights won't work? I tried google, not too sure about what's wrong?
I am in Albany on our way back to Brisbane!

I know this is dragging up an old thread. But bold reminder on page 1 is exactly what i needed to know. Thank you.
Sitting in the drive way, playing with all the new functions of my Defender and the head lights and high beam would not come on. Coming from an old Patrol. I am not use to anything electric controlling the car.
I just had to turn on the ignition and it was all good again. If only i had come up to the computer 20 mins ago before i started pulling and checking fuses.

Have you checked the relay, I had one fail & only had headlights via the flasher.
IIRC the relay is the same as the rear window demister, swap them over & see if it helps.

Hello everyone,
dragging up an old thread.
I have a problem:
1. Ignition on, engine running
2. Headlights on high, working
3. Flick headlights to low beam and they go out.
Light switch working, 12 months old,
4. Headlight switch working, power going on and off the corresponding wires both hi and low.
5. Relay on FAR right under fuses, was stuffed, it was brown (orignal) and the contacts were burnt out, and one wire was completely off. (i think it is for the alarm) replaced with a normal 5 pin headlight relay [hope its the correct one] and now the horn blows all the time, taken out the fuse for the car alarm and its stopped. [I think its number 27].
what do i do? I’m running out of options.
EDIT: All fuses and relays checked and swapped around, equally under the seat. High low switch working as it should, power on the low beam cable (Blue and red) turns on when it should and goes off when it should, equally the high beam. (Tested with a test light)
Thanks
