My wife and I have been getting our camping gear together for some time now and have begun going away for weekends testing our new equipment etc. She wanted to find some camping recipe ideas, so I suggested she checked out this, my favorite website. A good idea, I thought.

She did a search for recipes and came across a thread concerning skinning a cat - this thread contained many replies offering tips, suggestions and in general condoned completely mindless and cruel acts on cats in particular, as can be gathered from the thread title. My response to her was that it was only meant to be funny - no sane person could really hold these views.

Unfortunately, my wife is a Qld RSPCA volunteer and didn't see it this way - not at all.

What I'd like to question is this - do we really need these sorts of threads on a LR site?

I vote no.

I have to agree with Adrian - there are not many nazis on this site and that is what is good about it - for sure some posts may not be to my taste - and while I hate cats - of the feral type - this one would not be to my taste - my response would be to not read it.

However, as I said there are not many nazis here and I certainly respect your right to have your say.

Haven't seen the thread, so can't comment on it's content or context...but, whether it should be there or not, people always have the option not to read past the first post if they are (Or are likely to be) offended.

It's an open forum that runs 24hrs - well past some of the time some people have had a few beers.

I personally hate guns..............for several personal reasons .........and I cringe when I see people discussing them and what they do.

................but

1. It's a free world - and I have lived in many parts of that world that enjoy to eat animals which we would consider 'domesticated' - not my bag - but ............

2. Many posts on here are jocjular to say the least - you can't take them all seriously - if you do I think counceling is in order - or even simpler don't read the posts.

3. Truely distastful material is removed by the admin etc., PDQ (pretty damn quick) - but humour all beit a little dastateful, is left to the judgement of the adults that we are/

4. In relation to guns .......well we all know that they are just pen15 substitutes:(:D:D:D

Theres the old saying that you cant keep everyone happy, to one person a joke to another offensive, bit like TV, dont like the station change it. Whilst a site with people bought together by their love of LR's it is ultimately a "people" site. Not everything on here is about Landies. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats, not a big cat fan, have read the thread before and laughed. Would I in fact do that to one our 2 cats.....of course not. Sometimes I also want to throttle my kids :D, doesnt mean I would,

She did a search for recipes and came across a thread concerning skinning a cat - .

OK, I know we have one or two SPAM fans on the site, and recently some folks have been advocating cooking on their TD5... but cats?? What was that doing on the recipe page?

Surely skinning cats is Tech Chat?;)

I dont have much time for cats in the main. But saying that we have a pet one here and she isnt that bad; so maybe I should say that I dont like the feral ones (that goes for dogs as well). Regardless - there is no need to tell everyone how to skin one, and if there was - you didn't have to read it ;) As stated by "MT" already - its a technical skill and belongs in that thread :) I cant find it but do remember a bloke in SA who made hats out of them - now thats thinking !

Scallops, thanks, (I think) for commenting on the general sanity of this site

I wonder how your wife came across the thread - it wasn't in the recipes.

I could be wrong, but suspect that was a search for "cats" or something similar.

Does the site need threads like that - no. Does it have them - yes. Should they be thrown out - pLEASE! There are threads that have no interest to me, some that I find unnecessary and offensive, and a lot more that are both interesting and fun to read. The site doesn't need censorship about the taste of jokes on it - how would we ever keep the "Stars" thread going otherwise?

I can remember one of the first threads I read on here - the infamous "tenderisers" thread (thank all that's holy that your wife didn't read THAT one!)

I have come across one (1) only thread deleted in whole, and it was one where someone was ejected from the site.

I think the thread title gave fair warning, your wife wanted to read it (to see just how depraved it was) and found it unamusing, which she knew she would. I think she knows it's a joke, but doesn't find that sort of joke funny. Fair enough. I never found the old saw about the baby in the blender funny either - but it's a joke and I've just repeated it. It's the ridiculousness of the statement which makes it a joke.

I'd be sorry if your wife makes you leave the site, but you do what you have to.

Not having read it, but it would be a bit of tongue in cheek, just like the recipes for Camel stew that Jack Absalom wrote in his cook book. Having said that feral cats are detrimental and your wife as an RSPCA volunteer should appreciate that. I am a shooter as are many others, but do not condone unneccessary suffering and believe in clean kills where possible. Feral cats and dogs are top of my list when we do go shooting (not Dingo's) as they do extensive damage and if someone wants to utilise them as a resource to eat well and good, not my cup of tea.
I do not for a minute condone this sort of thing against domestic animals.
Anyone who finds that offensive needs to go to an abbatoir for the day, especially if they eat supermarket meat and complain about shooter/hunters. Nothing better than a nice feed of Skippy.
Maybe even a dash of Koala or Platypus.:twisted::eek:
Just kidding, Kangaroo is a great feed though and an under utilised resource.

I feel like I have just turned up to the party as everyone else is leaving...

Surely skinning a cat (by whatever means) is not cruel, just unsavoury. Cruelty would be an issue only depending on how the cat died or was killed in the first place.

Maybe it died of natural causes
or maybe it jumped off the roof after a bird and got cought in power lines
or maybe it was humanely put down by the vet
or maybe it had a congenital heart defect and died of fright when confronted by a dog...

None of these are cruel ways for a cat to kick the bucket are they?

One of my all time favourite arguments to have with the anti-shooting brigade who eat meat and buy it in nice shiny packs in the supermarket. ;)

I can appreciate the view of vegans, but any meat/fish eater that wants to tell me it's cruel to hunt but who eats nearly extinct fish like Cod, veal, venison, chickens, eggs, etc. had better be prepared for a lesson in modern food prep. :)

just to spoil the free speech debate: :p

Australia does have a right to free speech - it's a common law one - made in 1920 in 'W. & A. McArthur Ltd. v. State of Queensland' (28 CLR 530) as a result of the judgement, which found that without free speech, a whole chunk of the constitution wouldn't work!

so just because it's not in the constitution, doesn't mean it doesn't exist!

As to the cats business - I'm not particularly bothered either way.

Seriously though, feral cats cause havoc with native wildlife, and are an absolute menace. You also won't find a more cruel hunter than a cat or fox - these things kill for sport, not just for food like most predators.

Seriously though, feral cats cause havoc with native wildlife, and are an absolute menace. You also won't find a more cruel hunter than a cat or fox - these things kill for sport, not just for food like most predators.

As a responsible sporting shooter and [roperty owner I can personally attest to the damge that poor little moggies do to the native fauna population. At one properry we went hunting on I saw a stack of feathers from quail, rozellas, baby duck and crested pigeons that would have filled a wool bale at the back of the hay shed from 1 feral cat female.

She unfortunatly fell victim to a well placed 100 grain projectile that sent her to cat nirvana in about 0.00000000001 of a second.

The cruel part is people from the so called "cat lobby", a well oiled and well funded group of do-goodie doers that fight tooth and claw to stop local councils from introducing laws to stop cats in urban areas from killing native wildlife quoting rights etc etc.

I have a number of cat pelts that I have tanned. they make great trout fly bodies and hackles. They have to be good for something else but am yet to find one.

How funny it is that harmless fun quickly degenerates into something that is classed as 'bad', bad in whose opinion, two individuals,
I am sorry that your sense of humour was not on board, when reading the recipe list.
While RSPCA volunteers do a fantastic job, it is a sorry indictment that one feels offended at a cat recipe joke.
Those of us that are the outdoorsy types and members of other associations know of the RSPCA extremisms
As somebody said if you dont like the heading don't read it, but if you did read it don't go on and complain about it.

Just when i feel a cat funny coming on, i can't find my two volumes of things to do with a dead cat, perhaps ugh boots for the cold this time of the year would be appropriate.

While chenz makes a good point on the skills of numptys missus with cooking feral things, perhaps that too is not appropriate.
Or perhaps a jaffle iron bread and baked beans.

Jik22, the best thing about bigger game is take the tender bits off, the back fillets and the like, or perhaps a leg on the goat, and don't overcook.

Thrasher the best way to get a small pelt off, is use an aircompresor and blow it off.

All in all nearly all of us enjoy a good laugh, and that thread was in that category.

Personally I don't like the idea of people getting amusement out of causing pain towards animals. I do however enjoy eating them. I would not eat a tabby but I would and have eaten a lamb, veal, chicken, goat, piggy and fish. Where does this leave me? Humans have canine teeth and molars for a reason.

with roo's goats and pigs i always gutt straight away cut its throat then a piece of string through the achilles tendon hang itfor a couple hours while its hanging skin it,tender bloodless meat is much tastier ,then to get it ready for the hole in the ground green banana leaves are my favorite wrap it u p good /if no bananna leaves use some 100% cotton material[wet] use sisol string if needed ,then get chicken wire and wrap around and tie of well with wire makes it easy to remove the whole beast when tender /cooked use river sand if possible around the beast coals all around/under then cover with more sand and leave for 4hrsor more alot of coals are needed

Jik22, the best thing about bigger game is take the tender bits off, the back fillets and the like, or perhaps a leg on the goat, and don't overcook.

john

So you don't bother gutting them then, as you would a deer? Good - loads of effort saved, I like that idea! :D

This isnt really the place for RSPCA, vegans, tree huggers or anyone with extreme veiws on humor.

I dont really think you should have shown her the website if you knew that she is of these sorts of extreme veiws.

Buy the way, best way to skin a cat is much like a rabbit, but never do it to your next door neibours cat as some people take offence when you nail it to the fence to dry out.(It wasnt me, was a bloke I worked with who lived next to an active member of the so called "Cat preservation society" and had 21 cats living at their house. Cat ate bird, cat was killed and skinned and mate was taken to court, 19 cats were found new homes or humanly put down. Mate got told not to do it again).

This has been a good laugh but not because of cats, it's a pitty that your post ended up supplying a laugh at your wifes expense.

I think Vlad who posted the 101 ways to skin a cat is a Moderator anyway isnt he? He obviously didnt find it offensive.....

You know, the short sightedness or blinkered view of some of the do-gooders never ceases to amaze me.

Back in England, a mate who is a keen shooter lived on a farm that had lambs & sheep among other things. Right next to one of the boundaries was a piece of waste land where the local RSPCA lot released all their "nursed back to health" foxes. After shooting the first couple and identifying them as RSPCA ones due to the surgical stitching still in place that had not yet rotted away, he politely asked if they'd mind releasing them somewhere else, as he could well do without a steady supply of foxes being dumped within sniffing distance of a good food source provided by him...anyway, long story short, they effectively said they had every right to release them where they were and would continue to do so. So, he continues to shoot them, as he has every right to do when they venture onto his land!

You'd think a little common sense would prevail, and that if they genuinely gave a toss about the actual foxes, then having been informed of what fate awaited them, they might think about putting them somewhere out of range of a .223 they knew was looking for them....

With big critters like pigs goats, deer, camels I try and shoot a young specimen and bleed it ASAP. If I have the ability to harvest the whole carcass I hang it and skin and gut then leave hanging for a day or so.

If I don't have the ability to do this ie on the road going somewhere, I take the best bits, back straps on deer and camel or rear legs on pig and goat.

This meat makes great stews, curries and casseroles, but my favourite is a good red spagetti sauce:

2 onions, garlic italian herbs in a pot with a little olive oil, cut meat into bite sized chunks and brown in pot. Add 1 can tomato puree, 1 of crushed whole tomotoes and a can of water. Simmer for 3 hours, cook the pasta and Ron's your harmonica player

Similar scenario a few years ago here in QLD. A child was killed by a Dingo on Fraser island & although eventually the most aggresive dogs were culled, initially it was strictly catch-release policy and/or they could shoot with salt shot to attempt to scare the dogs from people.
I was doing a little tour by bike at the time & was taking some backroads from Moonie to Surat and near Southwood NP I stopped to talk to some property owners. They were very concerned about a sudden increased Dingo presence in their district, and even more alarming was that these particular dogs were very brazen and had no fear of people whereas of course most dingos in Aust have been hounded & shot at all their life & know better than to go within cooee of a human.
It was extremely fortunate that one tragedy did not escalate further.

We got my 5yr old son a kitten for christmas, he named her Angel, my kids love playing with her. Most cats just give a glance in your general direction when their name is called and only come running for food or treats, not Angel she comes running every time, she's long haired blonde, Ginger and a bit of black on her neck, I have never seen a cat that shows so much affection, she truly is a beautiful animal, as responsible owners should we got her desexed a few weeks ago so she wouldn't procreate and accumilate to the so called cat over population in Australia. Like both our families cats she stays in at night usually cuddling up in a ball at the bottom of our bed.

I have just had the displeasure of cuddling my heartbroken kids to sleep after burying their beloved friend, she ran out of the front door up the driveway and got hit. Try telling a 3 and a 5 year old their friend wont be around anymore to cuddle, play with a fluffy ball, or just love devotedly. My daughter is at my parents till tommorow and will be devistated aswell. For the record the driver didn't stop, probably like you lot just had a giggle to themselves whilst they drove away.

As we all know, every action has a reaction,

The Action: Some git lined Angel up and hit her, leaving her to die a painful and lonely death. To do this they would have been driving in the gutter. The reactions: My wife, a devoted animal lover is devistated and blames me for letting the cat outside, my boys cried themselves to sleep and so will my daughter tommorow.

So who can tell me why all cats must be tarnished with the same brush and die? And how would you suggest I explain your reasoning to my heartbroken kids?

All life is precious, even the lives of d1ckheads.

There's a huge difference between humanely culling a feral pest and deliberately knocking over a domestic pet and leaving it to die a long lingering death. :(

I have no time for cats in general, but would never stoop to something that low, nor could I think of a reason why anyone would need to. It would have been different if the cat had been pestering a pet bird perhaps, but even then it should be humanely dealt with after a friendly chat to the neighbour about the problem, and after less drastic measures had failed to address the issue.

We actually have an issue with my neighbour's cat trying his hardest to eat my kids' canaries and scaring them half to death in the process at the moment, and I've resisted all temptation to sort it because I know it's a kid's pet, and she'd be devastated if it didn't come home. Just as my girls would if it got their canaries....

Ok, this is normally my fire story but it probably has some application here.

Wind things back to me being 17. I've just picked up my first car about 5pm. So I go out to show some friends. All is good. I head home about 11pm.

So, where I live is a bit rural and there isn't street lighting. I come over a slight rise about a K from my place and as my lights come down into the next dip I see some rubbish. No worries I think straight over the top. As I get closer the rubbish puts it's head up :eek:

It was to late to do anything :( Clunk from under the car. :( :( I get out and have a look at my spoiler (sorry...car only 6 hours old). I then go back to see what it was I hit. It was pretty dark but I could see it was a cutsy kitten :(. So, what to do.:eek:

I saw a light in in a adjacent house (remember it's after 11pm by this stage). I decide to do the right thing so I go up and knock on the door. This guy comes out in his dressing gown and slippers and I tell him that I think I've killed his cat. He wants to go out and have a look so off we trod. As we approach the deceased he just walks straight up to it and picks it up. He shakes his head and we start walking back to his place. As I start to apologise he says "don't worry about it - you've done all you can mate".

What happens next surprises me a bit. Without warning he swings this tiny dead kitten into this huge arc through the air and lands it in the neighbours yard.:eek: He then says "It's the neighbours cat anyway...goodnight".

So I go off home saddened but happy that I had at least attempted to do the right thing. Anyway weeks go by. During a over the fence chat a neighbour recounts the story about how one of their child's friends has been traumatised by someone who killed their kitten and then callously placed it on their front path :eek:

I guess the moral of this story is that if you find your dead pet seemingly callously abandoned there may be more of a story to it than you think :(

Crested a hill and hit what we thought was a rabbit.
Looked behind and it was still twitching, so we turned around.

Went and checked it out and it wasn't dead, but not in good shape.
I said to my brother, we'll have to kill it.
He said, nah hang on a sec...went to the glovebox of the car, pulled out an aerosol can and came back.

Unbelievably....he sprayed it all over this thing, and no joke......

It got up and bounded away in the bush.

The best kind of ferral cat is a dead one. :excl:

On the other hand, I heard a DoC (Dept. of Conservation) guy talking on the National radio about how they had eradicated all the pests from an offshore island here, to protect the Black Robin or something. They were congratulating themselves about a successful eradication programme when someone asked how long the cats had been there - "oh about 100-120 years" came the answer. Then in stunned silence they all looked at each other with the dawning realisation that they'd just eradicated a whole unique species. Didn't make the papers that one.:D

Someone please explain :D

I would have thought they were still cats. Feral version of some 57 variety domestic bought over by the POMS or whoever. How would they be a unique species?

Well, thing is that over time genetic changes go on and species are identified by their genetic diversity. So over the years these cats hadn't been in contact with any others and according to the rules of biodiversity, they'd become a unique species.

Yes, they were cats and ferral, but there was no others like them anywhere else.
