View Full Version : Sliders, body or chasis mount?

Hey guys, looking at getting or making some sliders for the disco, not sure about how strong body mount ones will be, but a lot of the ones you can buy (ie, LRA) are body mount, but to me mounting them off the chasis would seem like a stronger option. Has anyone had experience with either?

Cheers

Hi mate.
I made my own.I already had factory or ARB sidesteps, been told they are both!!!!
Anyhow I fitted the sliders to the sills and then re-inforced the sidesteps to the sliders.
Have a look in the tutorials sections for "LandyAndys Sliders"

We have got at least 6 Discos with sill mounted rock slider/ tree fender units on them in the Gold Coast Club. These are put to all kinds of tests and have not moved a mm.Basically if you bend the slider (L shaped rhs 4mm wall) you have bent the car:D

Here's mine I made from Discowhite's instructions:
2971

They're body mounted & the square section is 5mm thick - they ain't bending no matter how hard I try :).

I'd appreciate those details also Justin, so long as you haven't already sent them.

Also do you have any similar ones designed for Defenders?
I've been thinking seriously about making some that could be unbolted and used as a solid tow bar when needed. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Me too, PM please, actually you might as well post them here, so everyone can see, me included :):D

For Discos and RR the body is rubber mounted from the chassis so it flexes very differently to the defenders which is solid mounted
If you where to mount them to the chassis you would need to allow adequete clearance for body flex (but then they look crap)

I'd be mounting them to the body as per everyone elses.

Cheers
Dave.

I also made my own because I'm a cheap bastard and I had half the **** laying around in the shed.

I used 50x75mm RHS mounted (welded) to 5x100mm plate that is bolted to the sill, bonded together with 10x120mm HT bolts and roof and gutter silicon (this **** is strong and hasn't moved a mm :twisted::twisted:).

Not the best looking set but it's good enough for my old dunga :thumbsup:

I made my own (for the IIA) from some 50mm OD seamless pipe I had lying around. I welded 10mm flatbar to the chassis at each of the three mounting locations (to spread the load), then drilled and tapped it for M10 bolts.

The sliders double as air tanks for the York compressor. I mounted them with class 4.8 Bolts - designed so that if I hit something too hard, the bolts will shear before the chassis bends. All has been fine so far - the sliders have lots of serious scars from rocks, but have not bent themselves or the chassis (or sheared the bolts). Pipe is 4mm wall.

I am about to start on some sliders for the 110, will be making them in the same way - just using RHS this time instead. On that topic - have an Alloy bullbar and sidesteps for a 110 which I will be getting rid of soon if anyone is interested.

i am about to embark on rock and tree sliders and a rear wheel carrier for the 110.

80x40x4 rhs (if available) and some 10mm plate is what i was looking at using. should cope just fine i would think...

edit:

update steel sizes are

rock slider 76mmx38mmx4mm and tree slider 40mmx40mmx3mm and hi-lift jack points 25mm NB pipe x 3.2mm wall

each slider should weigh in about 20kg when galvanised i believe

Yeah if you could PM the details and picks to me too that would be good thank Justin, considering I started the thread!! :D

Cheers guys.

Hi Justin
Can I also be included to those details?
That is one of my upcoming projects and I have already started sketching ideas... (and they are not going too well)

Hey Trav

I am about to make my own sliders and just wanted to know what thickness RHS did you use? I was thinking 5mm wall, but I am having trouble getting that. I can get 3mm or 6mm

Cheers

Andrew

PS...sorry to hijack the thread!

IIRC Chris Brain (Swaggi) from the LROCV had some rock slider which converted to a rigid tow.

He now lives in Adelaide, or so i have been told.

in rhs you can normally get 2 3 4 6 in most sizes but not all. never seen 5 but i havent gotten onto any steel merchants lately...

PS...sorry to hijack the thread!

My PIPE sliders on the IIA are 4mm wall and have held up fine - i.e. there are deep gouges out of them from rocks, but they aren't bent.

A mate made his from 3mm wall and managed to bend them (slightly) - but the copped a lot of abuse.

I have some 120x50 (?) 4mm wall RHS for my 110 sliders, but it is quite heavy, and if steel wasn't so expensive these days I would probably get some 3mm wall instead.

i have 3.5mm wall tube, about 35mmish dia i think, what ever all the rock crawling buggies are made from, they have bearly even been scratched. if you go for a thinner wall just make sure that you have adequate 'back bracing' (i suppose you call it) from the slider part back to RHS under your door, mine are about 350mm apart, i would't go anymore then 500mm. just my 2 cents worth anyways...:p

I have a set of Justins on and have given them a bit of curry and you wont bend them, unless you fall off a cliff.

i wish:(

got the side steps the ones that look like arb they could be arb or original landrover not sure

they are the tubular looking ones with the chequer plate on the top ones got a bit of damage on the side from previous owner bit of a dent and some paint missing cant see it from a distance but whe you get up close you can see it easily and that the chequer plate has lifted slightly.....

cant wait to get them off and get rid of them

Bloody hell Justin I bet you never realised how much interest everyone would have in your sliders.

Very nice I might add, I am going to make mine after I fit flares so that it all looks in proportion.
