I had the same problem when I did my cam a few years ago.
It was my fault really, I was supplied a later timing cover gasket which has the oil gallery hole in a slightly different spot. As a result, the gasket wasn't sealing around the gallery & the pump was sucking air from outside instead of oil from the sump.
Unfortunately, I didn't realise the later engines had a different gasket & it took a few nights to sort out what was going on. Now I check the gaskets are lining up correctly.
Maybe you don't have the same problem but it's worth checking if nothing else works out.

You didn't by any chance put a late model cam in without the skew gear for the dizzy?
Did the engine start?

sounds to me like the oil pump or oil pump drive has failed... pull it down to investigate, unless youve forgotten to install the oil filter, which given the run of stupid things Ive seen lately I cant discount as a possability... (nothing personal)
