Hi all,
Have been searching the old threads for info. Anyone got any info on how hard it is to retro-fit a county with a new TD5 Defender AC unit. Not interested in re-fitting the firewall vents at this stage (read to lazy!). Is there better options than a Defender aircon?

From what I have seen/felt the defender AC isn't all that hot (scuse the pun)
In my opinion, if you can get a cheap enough one, is to fit the ceiling type that they use in mini buses etc., You also gain a bit of leg room - especially on the passenger side.
These are far better than the defender originals.
I'll dig out a picture of the type I mean and post it up

This is only the evaporator (inside bit) you would still need the compressor and condenser in the engine bay, unless you went for a roof top condenser as well - but that would be bloody pricey.

There was an article in the archives re the minibus head on the factory compressor in a County - apparently made all other LR A/C look like a heating system. I'm too lazy to go find it for you, though, so you'll need to look for yourself. :p

In my experience the County Aircon when gas up properly and with the mixer box working properly works as well as the defender system. (I haven't experienced the TD5 aircon). The biggest cause of poor cooling in the county is the heater element. The hot water usually doesn't turn of properly and also the vacuum solenoid on the hot/cold air flap gets stuck on hot. When a friend regassed his with a hydrocarbon refrigerant it was very cold.
Just something to consider.
