View Full Version : The definitive tyre (wheel/lift/...) thread (and this isn't it)

With another thread started on the problem (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/showthread.php't=39771) and Vlad's ancient index of tyre threads not working (still! - I posted on that in August) I propose a solution to the really common topics that every newcomer wants answered.
What about sticky polls at the top of the Common Threads page for each of the really commonly asked questions?
E.g. one for "Best Tyres for a Disco 1 for off-road," another for "best Tyres for a Disco 1 for on-road," etc. The poll would simplify summarising the comments and the comments would help you make sense of the poll.
I think topics should be specific - not "Best tyres for a Land Rover"
Comments?
Should I have made this a poll?
PS fixing the links that 1000 people have tried to use in the common tyre threads would also improve things :o

I'll put in my two bobs worth... Goodyear MT/Rs have proved brilliant on my S1 Disco on dry bitumen/dirt/offroad and have seen 80K k of hard use without a single puncture. However, I find them to be extremely slippery on wet bitumen and for this reason will probably be returning to BFGs on my S2 Disco...

Mmmm. feraldisco, thanks for proving that there are people out there who still want to have their say on tyres etc, but please, this isn't the tyre thread :no2:
This is to discuss what sort of tyre thread we should have :)

I don't think a poll could offer useful information on a subject like tyres because there are too many variables. It's the comments that help me understand whether someone's recommendation applies to my particular circumstance. As you said, the poll would need to be specific to be of any use, so you would need a huge number of versions of the poll. Just saying "off-road" isn't much help; it could mean mud, rocks or sand.
eg one poll would need to be:
"Best tyre for a Defender which needs a good highway tyre that is OK on wet bitumen, wears fairly well, is reasonable in mud, doesn't matter about sand driving, but must be OK on rocks and with particularly strong sidewalls but at a reasonable price."
The next one would be identical except that price would not be a consideration.
Even with just those variables, you would need about 256 versions of the poll.
I prefer the current system, because I would need to read the comments anyway to find out whether the results of the poll were applicable to my situation.

Sure, Inc. Pity the thread numbers didn't carry over. I can tackle that tyre page but I still think that common topics need something open, not just an index.
I'll PM you the new link page when I have them all.

I think that a poll only gives an opinion with no substantiation. If I were about to spend $1,000 on tyres, I'd want more than a poll to convince me.
I reckon if anyone's keen, they'll use the SEARCH function.
Save your time & effort for something else.

I'll take it that no-one supports a poll, what about a sticky tyre (rim, spring etc) thread in the Common Threads section?
As feraldisco's contribution shows, people want to comment, so an index of old threads isn't the only solution.
And I will get that old index sorted, just you watch :p

The phrase "you have no idea what you have gotten yourself into" comes to mind :lol2:

I've had to drop a few I couldn't find the thread for (descriptive titles rather than thread titles).
I don't know how to load this up, though, so it's as a hyperlinked word file.
And just realised I posted in tech originally when this should have been general - mods could you please up my mistake?

Good index - thanks for doing all that work. I just read some good threads on the MT/Rs that I'm considering.

shouldn't we have a poll to see if a poll would be better ?;)
