View Full Version : 5th gear noise

I have had the inevitable R380 5th gear bearing noise for a while. Now, on overrun in 5th there is an interesting rattling noise from the gearbox area. It's also there when power is on just not as noticeable.
Is it about to let go?
I hope so - seriously!

Why? Is it still in warranty?

Yeah my extended warranty runs out at the end of the year and the gearbox is something they actually cover pretty well. I would be happy if they paid for the box to come out because then I could have the clutch done at the same time.

I wonder how many extended warranties that remained unused they had to sell to pay for your claims? It was a very wise move on your part. There must have been times earlier on when it gave no trouble that you wondered.
If I am ever signing off on my new Defender and the salesman tries to flog me one of those extended warranties, I'll be giving it careful consideration based on your experience.

Yeah I wonder if they will cover Defenders any more? :o
It was worth it for me because I claimed the cost back through my salary sacrifice arrangement, otherwise it would have been marginal. Effectively cost me about $300 a year which is cheap cover. The first year I had a dickie ABS wheel sensor which ended up costing them $900 so it paid for itself straight away.

Well the gearbox area has now developed a death rattle, but is it really 5th gear? Spoke to Kev at Rovertech and over the phone he thought so - apparently they changed the design of the mainshaft so that the 5th gear bearings can eat through the case hardening or something? Thanks Land Rover! So the fix is to put the older version in.
However - the rattle (which sounds like the old cardboard in the bicycle spokes that you used to do as a kid) is now present in 1st, fainter in 2nd, not there in 3rd & 4th and very loud in 5th.
Also this morning when cold if I put it in neutral and let the clutch out it was there, quite loud, but not when warm.

If you want to kill it before the warranty runs out - use 5th as much as possible. E.g. do long highway runs and stay permanently in 5th.

I don't think I actually have to break it, as long as it is making a terminal noise that should be enough!
A bit worried that if it actually disintegrated it might cause more damage.

I doubt it would fail catastrophically. Sounds like they will need to replace the mainshaft and a few of the gears - that is almost the whole internals. You may as well do the job properly, so you can be sure you don't get the box back with the minimum amount of repair work :o:D:twisted:
BTW - don't take any of the above seriously...
