Fitting ABS/TC/HDC to 84 Defender

Hello all,

I am yet to sell my D2 and get a derender but thought I would find out about the possibility of fitting the ABS/TC/HDC from the later vehicles.

Has anyone done it to a 200tdi defender, what is needed and do you consider it to be worthwhile?

Sounds like a lot of components to get from a wrecker but I'm sure I could get a good deal and I have liked it in the D2. The system would make an otherwise unmodified defender fairly unstoppable, Yes?

Does ABS, etc. work on drum brakes? Pretty sure an 84 will be drum in the back. Might need a disc brake rear axle swap too.

ABS/TC/HDC works with drum brakes - the Freelander has them on the rear. However the issue is the ring gear that is used with the sensor - not easily retrofitted on a solid axle. The best bet is to as you suggest and replace the rear axle with a disc/abs fitted version from a later model.

you dont need HDC or TC in a Fender if you know how to drive it......

ABS is great for emegencys, but if your "in control" then you dont need it either.
I used to pull the ABS / TC fuse in my volvo V40T4 when i wanted a play..... I could control it more on a Race track with no ABS or TC on....

I'm sure you will learn what it can and cant do with no ABS or TC, i also feel HDC is to fast for my liking.....

Well, I would leave the Electrickery to the later models.

The appeal of a 200Tdi defender is the fact that it is simple and has no computers on board.
Coupled with the need to have a very expensive($3000) ABS modulator, a mass of brake lines, wheel sensors ($500 each side for front, $1100 for rear pair) and different 2 stage brake switch, an ECU and wiring harness to control all of this spagghetti......:eek::eek::eek:

Haultech make traction control systems and they have been well proven in competition etc. Or you could just enjoy the challenge and experience no assistance from any device whatsoever, and find that a 110 with decent tyres and set up suspension won't really need ABS/TC/HDC etc after all.

And one other problem, I am CONSTANTLY having to replace wheel sensors, Hubs etc on these vehicles due to the 'Three amigos' appearing on dashes lately!!!What a pain!!!

Sorry I had to comment, what percent of control do you think you have in an emergency and what are you doing driving a Volvo on a racetrack :D:D:D:D:D:D;):D:D:D:D:D:D:p:p

But in all honesty it would be a big job, but not impossible, a mate just put ABS in an Ford XA from a newer model but his auto sparky

you'd be surprised. Every friggin braking zone/corner is an emergency during a race. ;)

Well, it is either an 84 or a 200TDi Defender - it can't be both, since the Defender and the 200Tdi both appeared in 1989 and in Australia 1990 from memory, possibly 1991. If it is 84 it will be a 110 (no 90 or 130 then either) and if Australian will have a V8 or an Isuzu unless it has been retrofitted with a 200Tdi, which is always possible.


It is probably possible to fit to an 84, but it would be a lot easier and a lot cheaper to buy a later model Defender.
