View Full Version : Batteries, Jump Leads, Power Stations etc...

I'm considering replacing the battery in my V8 Disco 1. The one I have at the moment works okay but I have no idea how old it is and my previous experience with batteries is when they've died they've died suddenly and I don't want this to happen if I am in the middle of nowhere.

But, until such time as I get a new battery I thought it would be wise to get a pair of jump leads. Am I right in assuming that because my battery is rated at 550CCA provided I get leads rated 550A or above they will be suitable for jump starting my car (provided the car I am jumping from can provide sufficient power)?

Also, do those 5 in 1 "power stations" really pack enough of a punch? I have one which is supposedly able to produce 900A but says it can start an engine "up to a V6" but doesn't specify what engine size. I know there is one sure fire way to find out but I don’t want to unnecessarily disconnect anything at the moment.

Finally, as mentioned above, my battery is rated at 550CCA but the winch I bought recently recommends a minimum of 650CCA. Is it worth going for the highest CCA rating I can find on a battery that will fit or does having a battery able to provide a much higher current that is necessary just a waste of money?

So many questions... :)
