Ok people, I have been toying with the idea of turning Yellow Pezza into a ute. I am even more keen after reading SCLARKS ute conversion on his Fender Gromet. So the question is How difficult is it to obtain a series 3 ute rear cab and roof?
Dose anyone also have any tips about doing such a conversion?

I am just doing a bit of research before i get too fixed on the idea of having a ute!:twisted:

Pretty easy to do but the rear cabin can restrict how far back you can move the seats. Depends what seats you have and how big you are.

G'day Paulthepilot_5 :)

It would be easy to convert yours as it is already a 2 door, you just need to get a complete truck (ute) cab and backpanel, it may be worth a PM to rob Hay as he has an Ex-army workshop truck that has a cab on it and he might want to part with it in the near future as I think he will be returning to a soft top.:) If not try Andersons at Pialba.

Jbarracl: I don't think it will be too much of a problem with the seats, i am only a skinny bugger. The seats are aftermarket bucket style seats, there is a fair bit of room between the rear bulkhead and the seats at the moment!

Wazza: I have always wanted a ute, and i think it would be a lot more practical for me rather than a hard top, Will also be a bit lighter, and better for off road work, and look cool. In the end it all comes down to personal taste i guess. I am still trying to decide if it will be worth the bother!

Cool, I will do some more research into the matter, Particularly to see what is involved in getting the rego changed. I'll PM you at a later date if i decide to go ahead with it.

It could if they wanted to be pedantic.

My S3 pictured in my avatar started out life as a troop carrier and from memory was listed in rego as a mini-bus or something like that (this is a few years ago)
You may have problems if you have retrofitted seat belts to your vehicle and so the new mounts would need to be certified, but that is only if transport goes over things with a fine tooth comb.

If you do it get some decent rubber seals, top and bottom for the new cab. Go see the mob near the roundabout at south pine road at enoggera (cant think of their name but they specialise in rubber for restorations).

if anything I suspect it may change your CTP rating...say from a 11 seat (bus) rating(higher) to 3 seater...my 110 had to be rego'd as a mini bus as it has 9 seats...therefore an extra $73....

Your vehicle would probably be regoed as Landrover seating capacity 3, so there would not be a problem with the rego or 3 rd party, BUT remember you will have less sucurity of you stuff in a ute, just as I have in my soft top, that's why I carry a dog in the back;)

Yep, i did think the same thing about security, but i worked out that the rear tail gate will block off access to my false floor drawers when it is closed. so i just have to put a lock on the tail gate, and anything I can fit the the drawers will be safe:D

My old SII "Turtle" went from being a hard-top to rag-top to truck-cab (ute) with a 3/4 canvas.

Step 1. Remove hard-top (get someone to help lift it off - SWB was easy for one of me).
Step 2. Bolt on complete truck cab.

Correct me if I am wrong, but from the pix it seems like you have a one-piece rear door - or are they 2 piece? Well, whatever you have now, you will only need half of it :p

Yep it is only a one piece door. I do have a tray gate from my SWB, but It is in bad nick, I will probably de-rivet it and fix it up, but it needs a lot of work!

Series 2 doorlocks are a bit of a waste.
Not many thiefs would be aware nowadays, but in the 60's -70's any respectable thief knew that with a small shifter and screwdriver you can remove the door hinges pretty quickly.
Even with the door locked:(

Generally speaking - not necessarily - but a variety of fittings have been used for both, so it depends what you have!

I have defender doors on it, but i think they are easy to break into compared to the series locks, just have to pull out the bottom window rubber, and you can pull on the lock mechanism to unlock it. :eek:, You can tell i lock my keys in the car alot can't you:(

At the moment they are mounted to a thick triangular aluminium bracket joining between the pylon behind the door going up to the roof bottom edge, if you get my drift!

Provided they aren't rusted up!

I suggest that if this aspect of security is of concern, it would be very easy to fit protrusions on the front edge of the door that engage the lip holding the seal when the door is shut and make it impossible to remove the door even if the hinges are removed.

For the back, it seems to me that a mesh cage could easily be fitted to the hood bows to make casual access impossible - the mesh at the back could be arranged to not open unless the tailgate was opened - and the latches on the tailgate lend themselves to the fitting of padlocks.

But with any car, no matter what you do, the determined thief will manage to get in.

The security side of things dose not really bother me. I will probably make a hard cover lid for the tray, then I can hinge it at the cab end and turn it into a pop up tent.
