Idler Bearings or Maybe Water Pump?

G'Day,

Ooopss, wrong Forum, i thoought i was in Tech.......Sorry, you know night shift

When our Disco (300TDi) starts up when cold there is a terrible rattle from the front end, after a short time driving (1-2km) its go's. Sounds like a kind of metal rattle.......

Im not really sure what bearing it is or if its air con side of things or alt side or even water pump......:confused:

Whats the best way to try and find which may by on its way out?

Im thinking of taking the AC belt off and start from there, but could it be the water pump?

The belt also makes the normal noise, but I just tab a bit of vas on the side's of the belt now & then :eek: and that fixes that, but there is still that rattle from the front, and I noted that the belt dance's & skips around which seems to makes the rattle worse, any ideas please?

i had the same thing

thought the bearing on my air con pump needed to be over hauled but in actual fact it is the idler/tensioner bearing (think thats what its called) just below only about 2 dollars to replace if you put a screw driver on it and put your screw driver to your ear you will hear whether or not it has gone as the rattle/grinding becomes far more apparent.....

There are actually three bearings on the 300Tdi belt - one on the tensioner and I think the other two are idlers - all the same size though and quite cheap. Its a good idea to replace all three as a routine about every 80 to 100,000 k's.

The wife has the Disco for two days away, so I will need to wait to do more.

I remember a while ago someone had a common brand part no for said bearings....yes I did a search but i give up using most search engines on these site.......

I also noted that in our w/shop man that on the 200 tdi the Alt has a ajustable bracket so you can set up the belt a bit tighter if need be as well as the belt tensioner, from memory you cant do that on the 300 tdi?

why would you use an external search engine when the internal search engine is wayyyy better

No I didnt use an external, but maybe I used one to many words in the search, droped one word and got heaps of info........just need to wade through it to make sure Im on the right track........looks like a 6203******* is the bearing for idler & tensioner for both ac & serp, but was just reading info re serp tensioner bearing being the same as a v6 commodore unit......

Ok this was what I was after

"ps: buy 3 of 6203 bearings because the A/C tensioner and idler are all the same size. You never know when one of them will suddenly sieze up.
pps: A tensioner pulley with bearing is available at TR spares $30, or a Holden Vn-VS at Supercheap, same money."

So this still the right bearing #? 6203-2RS
