I am just about to do my timing belt on my 300Tdi on my Disco. I am looking for a harmonic balancer puller that will also do the crank shaft timing gear and a crank shaft holding tool.

Does anyone know where I can these tools. I have found the 3 hole pullers everywhere, but the 300Tdi is a 4 hole harmonic balancer. Diff lock has one, but he cost of shipping is high from the UK.

Alternately someone that will replace it at a reasonable price in Sydney, I have all the parts needed. I am weighing out whether it is more cost affective to do it myself. Probably in the long run it is better to have the tools.

Any help appreciated.

G'day mate. I've found that in the long run it is better to build up a broad set of tools - event though it's a punish on the wallet at the time.

Try these blokes, they advertise in the Trading Post each week and although a lot of their gear is from China, they've stood up to my use/abuse.

Bowral Tool Box - 1300 369 501, Kirkham Rd, Bowral - free delivery to Sydney Metro - they've also got a store in Penrith.
Vijays Power tools - (02) 9700 8440, 897 Botany Rd, Mascot NSW.

They might not have top quality gear but it'll get you going and if you look after it you'll be surprised how long the cheaper stuff lasts....except spanners - i always snap the cheap buggers:o

Good luck with it.:D

In reverse order, to hold the crank, use a M12 x 1.25 thread HT bolt about 50mm long, with a 5mm dia spigot 5mm long machined into it.(My local bolt supplier did it for me on a slow day) That holds the crank even when torquing up the crank bolt. Then, a 12mm drill with reduced shank ( ie 9mm) will suffice to put the pump at TDC, providing you use emery paper to smooth the drill a bit, and wrap the sharp edges in tape. An ordinary 9mm (3/8th) drill lets you adjust the pump a little. As for the crank pulleys, I've been lucky and not needed them, others here have horror stories about what they find when they try replacing the timing belt. It depends on how motivated you are - ordinary HT bolts and a bit of steel plate can be made to pull the crank pulleys off - otherwise if this is your first time Coopers at Tempe are the go - they arn't the cheapest, but they will do it right. And if it's done right, you won't have to worry about it for years. Prepare for replacing the idler/tensioner/crank timing pulleys as well. Last but not least, make sure the crank bolt is torqued correctly and loctited at the end - if it comes loose, it can ruin one's day.

You can get a 4 hole puller of ebay. See here

You might need to get new bolts to use with it.

For the timing gear, get some M5 allthread and suitable nuts and oversize washers and use with the puller.

Regards

PS in melbourne I'm more than happy to lend my kit to anyone doing their timing belt on a 200/300 Tdi. I have a homemade holding tool for the harmonic balancer on a 200 Tdi.

Hi
I have a set of tools from one of the UK mobs to do the belt. it includes the puller and lock pins etc. I have fan hub spanner, I also have home made crank holder tool and 3/4" drive 27mm socket etc to do the crank bolt back up. Plus the hex drive socket to torque the tensioner SHCS bolt. The one thing i don't have is a dial or lever torque wrench for the tension. I worked out how to get in the range and 20K later all is sweet.

I am in Rydalmere in Sydney and will conditionally lend the tools for a small beverage contribution.
PM me

I did my full kit belt change over 5 days due to incorrect seal and making tools and looking after 2 young kids. Next time i think it could all be done in around 4 hours.

I bought a cheap universal harmonic balancer puller from my bolt suppliers.

I made a crank holding tool, then was looking in my Maxi Drive catalogue one day and found Mal sells 'em cheaper than I made mine.....

32mm fan spanners are cheap from any automotive tool place.

The flywheel tool is easy if you have access to a lathe and some taps. I just used a 3/8 BSP to 5/16 male flare union ('cause I had one) The hole in the bellhousing is 3/8 BSP. Then I ran a 6mm tap through the centre of it, grabbed a 75mm socket head cap screw (allen head bolt) and turned the last 5mm down to 5mm OD. When screwed in this slips exactly into the flywheel slot.
