Diff and C.v Oils

Just pulled my C.v's apart as the seals and bearings are all stuffed on my 81 2 door, Just wondering whats the best oil for my diff and do i pack the C.v's with grease or does that area suposed to have oil in it, As when i opened her up there was Nothing????

80w/90 gearoil is what we use. In an early Rangie like yours the CVs should be oil lubed. I would assume that you might need to replace a few seals.

Do a search on the forums, youll get loads of info. I did mine a few weeks back, and they were also empty. I filled them with Penrire Hyperoide Gear oil 80W-90. I also re-greased the universals and drive shafts (look at these too as they may also have been neglected). I gotta say, I have learned soo much from reading on this forum, its fantastic.

AFAIK the CV of an old Rangie is functionally exactly the same as the later ones which Land Rover lubed with semi fluid grease, so as far as I am concerned semi fluid grease is the way to go, as old rangies usually have lots of marks and wear on their balls. Something like mine really.
It leaks less. BUT not the grease you buy at Supercrap, you have to have the proper GL1 from Land Rover or the local concoction from Graeme ooper or others.
If you want to change it after going through a lot of water etc, then top up with ATF and drive around the block then drain.
AND I can assure all those nay sayers that the semi fluid grease gets EVERYWHERE. I pulled one hub apart after filling it with grease and the bloody stuff was on every part.It is hard to clean off.

So here we go again. This topic always ends up in lively discussion, traditionalists vs liberal/commie/pinko/early adopters.

Had a discussion on this same topic 3 weeks ago out bush.
Good 85/90 oil in the Diff and Fill the CV's up with Moreys was the recomendation given to me.

I currently have my CV joints greased, I renewed mine prior to a Kinberley expedition as one was notchy and the mechanic swore by grease.

As an aside and I hope not O/T, I've been getting parts from http://www.roverparts.com.au and getting really good service.

actually it's an NLGI 00, 3% moly, lithium based grease made by Texaco (Caltex) that they call 'Molytex EP 00' and is a really, really basic grease and definitely not worth the $$ that Land Rover charge for 350ml of 'One Shot'.
However good luck trying to find an equivalent NLGI 00 grease. It isn't a common 'viscosity'.
