Facebook is more of a social thing, like keeping in contact with people you know etc. Its a bit more than that though, but thats the essence of it. The groups like the AULRO one thats just been made on Facebook is just where people with similar interests can get together.

from crikey.com....
3. Hey Facebookers, it's what you signed up for...
Crikey intern Alesha Capone writes:
Surprise, surprise. Social networking internet site Facebook has begun selling advertisements (http://redirect.cmailer.com.au/LinkRedirector.aspx?clid=781b291a-081f-4d94-90f2-3407a3917c39&rid=1f3a4303-e1fe-4f11-9aa3-efd435ce882c) to all the people now addicted to it. The same people -- Gen X and Y -- advertisers normally find so difficult to reach. Cash cow, anyone?
There are three ways in which the advertising will target Facebookers.
1) Social ads: these are displayed next to users' profiles and are about goods they buy or register opinions about. These are then messaged onto their friends (other networkers linked to that person’s Facebook page) who must accept the message. In real terms, you will be forced to read even more annoying messages from people you only added out of politeness.
2) Business pages: Facebook advertisers can set up their own profile pages for free. The site is encouraging companies like Blockbuster, Condé Nast and Coca-Cola to share information with Facebook about the actions of the site’s members on their pages. Advertisers also can fine-tune their audiences. For example, they can target only 16 year old boys who go to school in Melbourne and enjoy skateboarding, Eminem and dressing like American rappers.
3) Beacon : This feature allows Facebook to work with third parties to collect data about what you do on sites like eBay and AllPosters.com. The activity can be broadcast to friends or strangers depending on your privacy settings. However, advertisers do have to ask for permission at the point-of-sale to publish the details. (So make sure you don’t give permission to spread the word that you bought a cup found in Britney Spears' rubbish bin in 1999).
For anyone who read the fine print before signing up to Facebook -- hi there Evan -- all this was foreseeable. Here are just a few points from Facebook's privacy policy (http://redirect.cmailer.com.au/LinkRedirector.aspx?clid=0d0bd125-4f0a-48b2-ae90-5b583f06245e&rid=1f3a4303-e1fe-4f11-9aa3-efd435ce882c) that should alarm the alert:
"We may use information about you that we collect from other sources, including but not limited to newspapers and Internet sources such as blogs, instant messaging services, Facebook Platform developers and other users of Facebook, to supplement your profile. Where such information is used, we generally allow you to specify in your privacy settings that you do not want this to be done or to take other actions that limit the connection of this information to your profile (e.g., removing photo tag links)."
Translation: That photo of you wearing a lime green miniskirt and orange boob tube at the Year 12 “bad-taste” themed formal in your school newsletter from three years ago? The hot guy in accounts has just seen it.
"Facebook may use information in your profile without identifying you as an individual to third parties. We do this for purposes such as aggregating how many people in a network like a band or movie and personalizing advertisements and promotions so that we can provide you Facebook. We believe this benefits you. You can know more about the world around you and, where there are advertisements, they're more likely to be interesting to you. For example, if you put a favorite movie in your profile, we might serve you an advertisement highlighting a screening of a similar one in your town. But we don't tell the movie company who you are."
Translation: Facebook are trying to convince you that when they bombard you with annoying ads it's to help you out.
"Advertisements that appear on Facebook are sometimes delivered (or "served") directly to users by third party advertisers. They automatically receive your IP address when this happens. These third party advertisers may also download cookies to your computer, or use other technologies such as JavaScript and "web beacons" (also known as "1x1 gifs") to measure the effectiveness of their ads and to personalize advertising content. Doing this allows the advertising network to recognize your computer each time they send you an advertisement in order to measure the effectiveness of their ads and to personalize advertising content. In this way, they may compile information about where individuals using your computer or browser saw their advertisements and determine which advertisements are clicked. Facebook does not have access to or control of the cookies that may be placed by the third party advertisers. Third party advertisers have no access to your contact information stored on Facebook unless you choose to share it with them."
Translation: They are trying to turn you into a Coca-Cola, Blockbuster, eBay addict who will max out a credit card buying whatever your friends like in an effort to be popular and fit in (after asking five times to be their friend).

I had a couple of pokes from people wanting to be friends. I had never heard of them so I ignored the emails.
I see this as a prime way to receive viruses so no way will I get involved.
By the way be careful what you post on your profile.
Prospective employers now look at them. A woman teacher was fired in the US for posting a photo captioned that she was at a party.
I see this as new age crap.
Is a friend really someone who is too lazy to contact you. I call these maybe acquaintences or maybe "someone I have met once or twice."

I thought Facebook was made so people with unfortunate features can meet other people with the same problems and have cyber sex. You know the ones, the spotty balding guy at the bar who smells like he fell in a mixed vat of Brut 33 and fart spray and the girl the average chicks go out with to make them look hot, when they're really not.

It's the lazy mans way of keeping in touch. Your friends can see what you are doing, and you can keep tabs on them. I am hopeless at keeping in touch so FB works well for me. (by hopeless, I mean that if it isn't face to face it don't hapen! I don't even reply to SMS from my girfriend - I just wait till I get home!)
Example - a mate from school who I havent seen in years got engaged the other day. If it wasn't for Facebook we probably would have long since parted ways and never spoken again, and I wouldn't have been able to congratulate him on something so very special.

Interesting assumptions...
I'm not even middle aged, but I can be a grumpy bastard
Landrover brings people together, not FB...
I meet so many LR owners just moving around in my vehicles that I enjoy it.
I also step *away* from the keyboard, back into a reality and interact on a personal face to face level.
Seriously, facebook is an overhyped rubbish site, both my kids are on it...
Why, oh why, when everyone jumps on the "conspiracy theory" bandwagon regarding Google Street View, Google Earth etc would people be comfortable putting themselves onto a web site hosted by the leading "data collection" company on the internet :p
I get a great interaction on THIS SITE, why the hell would I want yet ANOTHER login and site to speak to the same people? Seems like sitting in their lounge then ringing them on their mobile as well...
And regarding the Doof Doof comments, look at the MAIN demographic for Face Book....
Under 25's......
I'd much rather meet people than have cyber friends... This is NOT TO SAY, that I haven't met some GREAT people on this forum that I am yet to physically shake their hand, sit down and chat, or have a drink with.... But it WILL happen when I can possibly arrange it.
Another example is my Riding forum I am on, it's an even tighter group than the AULRO one, they chat a little online and spend MOST of the time actually MEETING each other and RIDING their bikes.....
Thats actually DOING... Not living in the lounge...
All I can say, spend less time pounding the keyboard (I do it for a living) and more time out in the real world meeting, greeting and enjoying actual Human interaction... Actually do your hobby... Enjoy your passion...
But remember the internet is NOT the be all and end all...
In fact, I think it can be as much a curse as it is a blessing
And feel free to make judgements of me all you like...
No offence, but what anyones opinion of me here is, I dont really care... I know who I am... I know I would help anyone here who needed it / asked for it...
And I'm comfortable with myself.....
I dont need 400 online friends on a MySpace page to feel good about myself...
I dont need a computer site to tell me I should maintain contact with friends (real friends, not people I met a few times and get along with).
And I actually turn this thing off (and my mobile) often and disappear into other facets of my life a lot more than I used too! It's a welcome getaway.
So, off you go, go your hardest....

I read in an article yesterday The facebook is a major contributor to Phishing and identity theft.
Some stranger who wants to be "a friend' contacts someone and establishes a relationship over time, and asks questions to gain a profile of the target.
Then in concert with information gained from other sources steals the identity of the target.
I have received a few of these wannabe friend messages, and have ignored them all. I believe the less you have to do with Facebook the better.

I do however also ignore friend requests from those i don't know, not trying to see how many friends i can have, just a good way to keep uptodate with those friends i don't have time to catch up with normally.

How do you know they are who they say they are?

I don't understand the point of Facebook (and similar sites).
there is NO point, Ron.....
(maybe it's just a backdoor move to corner captive advertising targets)

Have a look quickly as it will probably change.

I use facebook purely for keeping in contact with family and friends who are insterstate and overseas and those on the other side of town as well as having joined some great causes and groups - AULRO being one of them!
I could have also chosen to install and re-code a blog site w/ gallery script also but it's something I don't have time for these days (pre kids I had time to do this) so FB offers me that functionality free - quick and easy!
I've found old friends from primary and high school back pre 1990 that I lost contact with...
i'm guilty of being one of those 35 year old tekko geeks but I still have a life *lol*

I don't get why people get so knee jerk negative to these things. It is just another tool that you need to use carefully. I guess some time ago people made comments about how awful the telephone would be too. I certainly understand concern's as raised by Incisor and people should not be naive about who is using the data for what purpose.
But to suggest it is a lazy way to keep in contact or that people should get out more etc etc is just not getting the point. I don't want to ring every one of my many cousins, siblings, uncles, aunts etc every day. Facebook allows you to maintain some relationships that do not warrant that level of contact. It does not replace me ringing friends or visiting people.
And don't confuse myspace and facebook, they are very different.
But I don't see how Facebook will improve my AULRO experience. Facebook does have some neat event management features but unless we all use it there is no point. I am keeping an open mind and joined the group but IMHO it makes more sense to centralise AULRO stuff here.

It was never really intended to be an AULRO extension per se. Just another way of AULRO people who also used FB to keep in touch more.
I hardly use FB any more anyway - again no time !

I have finally joined facebook, but can't work out how to join groups - does the AULRO group still exist??? And if so, how do I join?
