Help - brake problem

Hi - just changing the front pads on the 99 fender, and have come a bit unstuck. I changed the first set in no time, with no bother. I am using a break spreader, but somehow it slipped off one of the pusher things (Like my technical jargon) and it popped out almost touching the disk. Now I tried levering it gently back in - no joy. Then tried a little harder, and even tried levering it with screw driver, but it wont push back in. What's worse, is that the gap is about 1 mm short of getting the old break pad in! (Which only has about 3mm on it anyway.

Can anyone offer some advice? It's stuck in the garage until I can sort it out, and I am meant to be going to the flinders tomorrow..

ok give it to me again,
you have changed the first set and you now have removed the pads from the other side, and cannot push the piston back? right?
ok have you taken the filler cap off the master cylinder, [where you put fluid in]

Thanks for quick reply harry - that is right - filler cap is off, and I cant push the piston back enough to get old pad back in...

ok now we have something to work with, thought it would have been easy, if the filler cap was on, never mind.
i suggest that you may have the piston cocked perhaps, try pushing the other piston in and seeif it will go back, or have you done that,
i will wait if you have to run outside.

Thanks Harry - I loosened the break hose slightly to release pressure, and slid a small sheet of metal behind to make sure it was straight, and it pushed back in fine. :-)

Appreciate the offer of hangin on - but not necessary today :-)

the other problem may be that your piston has popped out and the seal has come out too far.
is it leaking fluid?

excellent result, you may have to bleed the brake after giving the pedal a pump up to set the pads back onto the disc.

phew - thought that may have ended not so well...
Next time crack the bleed nipple, I use a "G" clamp, tighten the clamp and press the piston/s in for clearance and close the bleed nipple, Regards Frank.

Thanks for the tip Tank - I actually looked for a bleed nipple, but couldn't find on. How does the g-clamp work? The defender is all metal pipe, and I couldnt locate a bleed nipple. I just gently loosened the pipe in the back of the housing until a drop of fluid came out, and then pushed it back, and tightened it off.

Oh well - all good for my trip to the flinders, which will start tomorrow now. Patawarrta gap - here I come.
