Went to the Mudgee field day today, round trip of 250km.
Saw one Defender, 'bout half a dozen Disco 1 & 2s, one D3 - waved to all of them. Responce - from the Defender of course. Nothing from any of the Discos......

I wave to them all.
Series and Defender drivers wave back - I think they are surprised that a P38A driver knows to wave.
Most RR and Disco drivers don't wave back - unless they have cars set up for off-roading.

I wave to all landys and some rangys, I only ever get a return from series and or defenders. I once got a response from another disco and i nearly had to change my pants. My disco doesn't exactly look like a shopping wagon either.

Having just driven 12k in a month, I waved at every LR I saw. I've got to say that the series/110/defender hit rate is virtually 100%. However you are very very lucky do get a wave out of a disco owner... :(

Well, well, well... interesting thread.
I wave at Defenders and Series. Don't bother with Discos and RRs or Flandies.
But no-one seems to wave back. Why? Coz I am in a Flandie (the old Turtle is still in storage).
All of you guys seem not to notice Flandies if, or when, the driver waves. Not very nice... :(
... and yes, I did get a wave back when I was in my Series I or Series II the "Turtle"... but never got a wave back from a RR or a Disco.
Maybe one day when I get the 2 inch lift, a bull-bar, spotties and a pile of other accessories on my Flandie I might get a wave back... or am I dreaming again?

I drive a D3 and proud of it. Its a vehicle I've aspired to own for years and can finally (just) afford. If someone waves at me I wave back, regardless of what they drive.
You guys are type-casting D3/RR drivers and worse, going to print here will only alienate your fellow LR owners and forum members. Remember, a lot of you guys are LR fanatics, regardless of what you drive, but that isn't true for everyone.
Some people have bought a D3 or RR simply because they think that particular car is right for them. I suppose what I'm saying is that if you're not a LR fanatic you're not looking for people to be waving at you, so you don't see it, and you don't wave back.
My 2 cents worth.
PS: I've had my D3 for 6 months and they only waves I've seen are those from other drivers (all makes) when off road.

Sorry, I don't mean to type cast or be derogatory to anyone. Just reporting that in my 12kk I just did I waved to every disco and only received one wave back from a D3.
If you wave at me I'll wave and smile back but I'm forming the opinion that it's not worth wearing my arm out waving at d3/discos as I just feel silly when they don't wave back. :wasntme:

When I picked up my Defender @ Winsor and drove it home to Orange I got a few waves and thought the other drivers must have known the vehicle, It took a month or so to realise it was a series/110 thing. I think we don't wave at disco/rangies because we are so used to them not waving that we don't even look for it. And yes that is type casting, Sorry!
We probably don't wave at freeos because they are below our field of vision and that is apart-height, Sorry!
I thought it was a mutual comiseration society thing with the series/110's.
Maybe there are enough of us to make it happen in all LR's
Steve.

I used to wave to all LRs until I found that, at best, people would look at me wondering who the hell I was so I changed my policy and only waved at people who looked like they used their vehicles 'properly' ie. Had a bit of mud on them, a few mods maybe but I'm still only getting a few confused stares of people. :(
I'm gonna keep on waving though for that one time when someone waves back! :)

Always waved to Wranglers, most waved back, but some look at you like "What the?"
Never waved at Cherokees or Grands unless they waved first. If I'm buying a Disco, I guess I'll wave to other "offroad looking" ones, but probably not soccer mums - might get reported to the police.

Well I drive a D3 and wave to all Landies I see on the road. I agree with the other comments in this thread though, as I get the most waves back from Series / Defenders drivers, some Disco 1's + the odd RR Classic.
As stated by others, if the car looks prepped for off-road, the better the chance of a wave back. I saw 2 Defenders heading south towards Perth on the Great Northern Hwy the other weekend and got waves from both of them in succession (I was in the D3).
Many of the newer cars seem to be driven by people who bought the car because it's nice, big & safe, not because they are a LR or off-roading enthusiast. I think that's why the large proportion of D2, D3, RR Sport and to a lesser extent P38 drivers don't wave back.
I also have a Series 3 ute and a 110 Isuzu County so I place myself firmly in the Enthusiast category :) ;)

Hmmm...well...I was upset that another defender did not wave to me today...but it was a woman driver so she is excused ;)
Why should she be excused?
She is experiencing one of life's great joys.
She is one of a privileged few.
And does she realise a woman's sex appeal is ten-fold once she gets behind the wheel of a Defender.
No excuse.;)

Interestingly things are changing slowly.
Nearly all the Defenders and Series Landies are now returning my waves, albeit with a puzzled look. Where is it written that a RRS can't wave ! When I'm in the P38a NOBODY returns my waves, have you no sympathy ?

A recent trip to the Flinders Ranges saw me and on coming 4WD's (not just LR drivers but Toyota drivers, Nissan drivers, Mitsubishi drivers, Holden drivers, Mazda drivers etc...) all waving at each other. It certainly was not a LR to LR thing.
Out in the country it seems so much more friendly than the city.
Chris
Anywhere on back country roads I find people wave. ( not just LR ). Not so much in Victoria but certainly in NSW and SA and NT. Even on the main road from Mildura to Broken Hill you get many waves.

Not many LRs in Darwin, so not many people to wave at. :(
Whenever I see a Disco, and there are other people in the car with me, I usually shout "Disco!" so they see. Odd, I know, but I like Discos.
Actually, I saw two Defenders pass each other this morning, which was a surprising sight - very rare, in fact, in a sea of Toyotas and Nissans. I wonder if they waved at each other?

I am very happy to wave at RR Sports or D3's etc, but knowing protocol as I do, being the more senior to these new generations I can only return a wave not initiate one. ;)
Diana
P.S. So far I have not had the pleasure of returning a wave. (These upity younger generations, don't they know who I am?)

I get a couple of waves each day from Defender drivers, to and from work. Must admit the Disco drivers seem to either ignore me or look up... wondering what I am pointing at ! :D

Drove down to Yass yesterday and into Cnaberra and back today - waved at a variety of Discos, RRs and one Freelander, no response from any, only responce I got was from a Series 3 on the outskirts of Yass as I was coming back.

Driving the old series 2 topless(the car not me:D), I get wave from almost everyone...
People on the street; car, 4x4, truck drivers, almost all wave.
Defender drivers just smile and shake their head:D.
And alot of nice young fillies smile at me (or is it the landy):p.
It is rare to not get a wave acknowledged when your in a classic. (unless your drive a landcruiser or patrol):wasntme:

no ones going to believe me (unless you were on the trip and got the wave returned from her as well) BUT...
on the run through the park last weekend I got a wave, from a freelander, driven by a woman, AND she was blonde, AND she was good looking...... (and NM is probabley going to lambast me now... :o )
I nearly ran off the road in surprise.......

I suppose what I'm saying is that if you're not a LR fanatic you're not looking for people to be waving at
you, so you don't see it, and you don't wave back.
My 2 cents worth.
Disagree with this post.
I don't think anyone is typecasting D3/RR drivers. Next you'll be saying we're discriminating against them:o
We have always owned Landies & Rangies & always give the salute. The Landie drivers always salute back, a portion of the Rangies salute back, but pretty rare to see a Disco salute.
I was bought up in the car culture, where whenever you saw the vehicle you were driving (regardless what it was, Holden, Volva, BMW etc) you always did a salute, which was followed by a cheerful response (and vice verse)
That's going back som 30-40 years now. And the culture has definitelhy changed.
And printing about it. Well I see no reason that would alienate the drivers who don't salute. If anything, It's about re-education. They would be proud with their purchases, & show them off at all opportunities, even if they don't go off road. So keep cheerfully waving, they'll eventually come round. And those that don't - quite frankly, it's their loss, not ours.:D

gotta say i am a disco driver and wave at all landies with the exception of freeloaders as i never ever spot em till it is to late have to agree tho most disco drivers don't wave
funny story
driving home from work around 6am every morning there is this gray haired lady looks very prim and propper drives an imacualte D2 i started waving
every morning 1st week she would just ignore me 2nd week she would look then look away 3rd week she waved back a few weeks after that and upuntill now if she passes me she waves before ido lol persistance is all it took
but even if i don't get waves back i will still continue my strike rate is about 50/50 across teh range
worraps
That's the spirt:D We'll soon be taking over the world:cool:

Police on the side of the road

I have noticed in general, that when I'm driving the county, I get friendly return waves from everyone driving series to defenders (but generally not discos & rrs - I think that most of them don't even realise that what they have comes from the same heritage)...
However, when driving the disco, it's hard to get a return wave from anyone until you go west of Cobar and north of Port Augusta - then most everyone acknowledges you whatever the brand being driven...

I got a P38 and I wave at all LRs. But I find most defenders will wave alot of Rangies will too, but discos not many at all.

Main problem I had with them was they either rattled or I could not open them.
Off topic breifly, isn't it an interesting design feature that a window can rattle AND be to firm to move. It took a lot of thought to get that.
I've been ignored by shiny D90's. OK, sometimes you just don't see people until it's too late but other times they've looked at me with "what are you waving at, you idiot". People like that should be pulled over and have their Defender confiscated.

What I have noticed over the last 10 years (having owned RRc's for almost 25 years) is that RRc's now wave back and Defenders quite often, but I think some Defender owners are so surprised to see a RR owner wave that they are gone before they can respond.
NO RR Sports to date, but as I said before, my RRc is senior to them so like with a salute I can only return a wave not initiate one. :D:D

Geez, weeds, you'd think we'd be better at it! :o
I could understand if it was the other way round - I once waved to about half a dozen army rovers, I got  from each of them, the last driver looked like she was radioing "yeah, he's waved to me too, wtf?" :D
That said, I did wave quite animatedly at a 110 County on Friday and they (driver+missus) didn't wave back, but then again, my pushbike is only in part landrover ;)

Just back from two weeks up North - on the way up through Alice Springs my non-believer Land Rover mate was driving the Defender and lo and behold we spy an oncoming white Defender. I told him he had to wave as ALL Defender drivers wave to each other - and the lady driver did not wave.:(
All was not lost - coming out of Alice we meet another white Defender - wave says I.......you guessed it.....another lady driver and no wave.
I lost all face with the non-believer. We did not meet another Defender until about 50 kms out of Albury - again no wave.:(
All this could not have happened at a worse time - I spent days battering my mate about the Land Rover culture...what can I say.
If anyone knows of the two white Defenders in Alice - please let them know the side has been let down.:(

Don't flame ALL Disco owners! I'll wave to all LR owners. Even Handbrake waves to all LR drivers - and gets replies!
Pete (with the sore arm).
ps NSW LR drivers have the lowest return wave rate.
