Hi all,

I've been looking around for 110 (either a Defender or a County) for a while now, and I gota tell you it's bloody frustrating. Not only are they relatively rare (at least compared to Cruisers, Patrols etc), most of the ones that do come on the market in the price range I'm looking for (under 15k) are in pretty ordinary condition. Thought I might have found a 95 Defender on the weekend for $13000, but when I showed up to have a look it was full of rust :(

Was also going to look at one a week or 2 ago, and the guy I spoke to assured me this one was definitely in good condition, but I would have to wait a week to get a look at it because he's away on work ... next thing I get an SMS telling me its sold

Anyway, I shall persist with my hunt I guess. Might go and have a look at the County currently for sale in the markets section at some stage this week (anyone know about the reliability or otherwise of the 3.6 Isuzu engine he's put in?)

One other question - the TDi 300 I drove on the wekend didn't seem to want to move very far unless you virtually stood on the accelerator - is this normal? Was OK once I got used to it, but felt really strange to start with ...

Hi mojo,

That looked like a nice machine, though I'd suggest comparing the price with the Redbook (in the case of Counties, Redbook isn't too far out for "average condition" vehicles) and making sure you are getting your money's worth.

Paulthepilot_5 has an Isuzu 3.6 in his Series 3 and it seems very nice - his has the Isuzu 5 speed, though. Might be worth a PM.

The reputation of all the Isuzu's is pretty good re longevity.

Lots of people have commented in the past that throttle cables slip on some of the newer (than Isuzu) diesels.

The first time I let the clutch out on my last Defender 300 I wondered what happened. Seemed like the handbrake was on, after looking she was still sitting next to me :D.

They need revs to get the turbo up and running then they go like the clappers.

Mate, you cannot get a stronger more reliable engine for a landy! I have the same engine in my series 3,

PM me if you want more info on the engine.

Cheers
Paul

Thanks for the replies. Nice to know that the 3.6 Isuzu is a good engine.

Also good to know that the blinding acceleration :D I experienced in my test drive on the weekend may be due to a slipped throttle cable ... (or could be normal Fender take off speed :o )

Depends which 3.6. The old 4BC1/2 had a few problems (in trucks), hence the updated 4BE1 - which is a good engine smoother. Quite smooth and doesn't mind being wound all the way out. Similar output to a 4BD1, but at slightly higher revs.

EDIT - if you want a (120") ute, DaveS on here has one he will be selling soon.

Yeah, I was having a look to see what a late(ish) TD5 110 would cost to replace my TDi, and couldn't find any locally at all!

G'day Isuzurover :)

Is that the Aust Production King Cab?? as they were thin on the ground but the extra 10" was brilliant:D

AFAIK the 120" isn't (usually) a king cab. It is basically a 110 ute with an extra 10" welded in the middle of the chassis (a-la 130). Made from mid-late 80's. Only available with a 3.9D and non county spec trim. I was told the reason was that you couldn't fit a full-size tray on a 110.

G'day Isuzurover :)

Sorry, I had forgotten about those :( I was thinking of the 127 which had the King Cab.

cheers

Thanks for that - the 4BB1 is the old 3.6. The 4BC1/2 is a 3.3

mojo - the 4BE1 is a good engine, and developed after the 4BD1. I have heard a few people say it isn't as torquey low down as the 4BD1, but take it for a test drive and see for yourself.

she will probably be a great little truck to drive with one of them, not too loud, and plenty of get up and go. The 4bb1 i have in mine is a lumpy old thing, but has never missed a beat! very simple and easy to work on engine!
