View Full Version : Oh Dear! What am I going to do?

The bloke across the road has a SII table top which has been in his drive for months. Everytime I've walked past, I've ogled it. If I've been with with my wife, I've sometimes wondered (aloud) "I wonder what he doing with it?"

She told me to "Forget it!".

Today I saw him in his yard so I strolled across and asked him.

He said if I want it I can have it. He'd only just called Land Vehicle Spares to see they wanted it but the bloke he needed to talk to wasn't there.

So, being a bit thick, I said "Really? Fantastic! I'll take it."

Now I've gotta sneak it home and hide it in the back yard (may be difficult). I'll get it home before I tell her 'cos if I tell her first, it won't be allowed home. I'll need to organise some help to get it here as it's not going at the moment.

I've gotta sneak it in whilst Elisabeth is at work - she's on arvo shift this week and I'm on day work.

I've spoken to the guys at KLR Auto and they'll drop down after work to give me hand.

When a woman buys something she doesn't need in a sale she doesn't think in terms about how much she just spent but how much she just 'saved'.

If you tell her that the bloke across the road wanted $1000 for it but you got it for free you will be rewarded for 'saving' the $1000. :)

Tried that, didn't work.

This did though

Ron tell Elisabeth that it's a form of basic reliable transport on standby for when the P38a breaks down. Shes will argue, then you hit her up for a RRS. Naturally she will refuse so you will have to compromise and agree with her that you cannot afford a RRS so you'll do her a favour, because you love her and keep the series.

She wins, you keep the series. All are happy

LWB - it has a Rover diff rear end. Oh, hang on, there is no diff in the rear end - just a housing. Series IIA - headlights in the centre.

When I get it home I'll suss out the serial nos. for you all. Elsiabeth is off to work shortly, I wonder if I can sneak it home tonight.

Anyone on the forum live around here (apart from me)?

I'll have to clean the garage out and puish it in. Then I can load the table-top up with all the stuff that's currently on the floor. :D

Ron,
It reminds me of about this time last year when I got mine (well actually two). They arrived and I could not get the old one in the yard. It did not want to co-operate. Then the other one (Virgin-Blue) arrived and had to stay out on the street.
Well I don't have to say it was interesting around home for a while.
I eventually compromised and got rid of the old one (and have regretted it since due to having to go and find parts that were on it).
Now I get the "you will never get it registered!"
We will see.

Good luck,
Russ

Perhaps you can do it the other way. Just park it proud as punch in the driveway, withdraw $1000 from bank, say you'd bought it for $1000, get in trouble, sleep in doghouse, and then the next day mysteriously "find" $1000. Equilibrium returns to the world...

Seriously, good score. I'd love to "find" something like that and make it my (country) town car.

I bought a new barrow last week!

It's halfway into the garage. Ity hit the door. I've fixed the door and opened it a bit more but I've now got no helpers to push the Landy in.

I'm about to go out and fit a towball to the front bar so I can push it in with my hard drawbar (I forgot I had it when I brought the car home. I could have pushed it by the rear towball. Now it's facing the wrong way.

I tried topost pics last night but they were too big and need resizing - then Elisabeth came home. That stopped that - she was still upset about the dog.

The SIIA must have a PTO. There's a splined shaft jutting out of the rear cross-member. I'll have a closer look this arvo when I get home from work.

If I can, I'll tow it out of the garage and get the high pressure cleaner onto it.

I really think it's gunna cost a few bob to get it mobile. I haven't had a really good look over it yet. While they say "Never look a gift horse in the mouth", may I should. Still, it's probably in better nick that the SW you picked up in Glenbrook, Ace. :)

I don't know to what level of restoration I'll go - just enough for rego or a full blown thing for club use. I must admit it would be useful if fully registered. I'll never reach Dinty's standards.

I need to get my MIG welder back from my son in Newcastle (Mayfield). I wonder if someone coming to the Expo could bring it down.......? (It is gasless so there are no gas bottles.)

I wuz thinkin'

As it is only a truck cab, a full restoration may not be that hard.......

A couple of points I noticed. It has strengthened front and rear axle housings like the military ones I saw at Dinty's.

I thought of fitting RR diffs and that may be easier than expected. The diff housings have filler plugs in them so I won't need to modify them (see http://www.aulro.com/afvb/showthread.php't=34311 )

Most SIIAs had the strengthened housings.

RR diffs are a pita IMO - you end up spending a lot of time in 3rd and you have useless gearing offroad. If you can get a cheap set of 4.1s they would probably be an aceptable compromise.

Great stuff Ron.
As far as I know all the Limestone coloured Series2 Landies in Aust were originally powered by the Landy6.Another way of checking is the front drum brakes will be the 3" wide rather than 2 1/4" wide.Easy to check, the 3" drums have square shoulders compared to the normal round shoulders.Look in the gaps in the rims front and rear,if they look bigger on the front you have a good score,1/2 decent brakes as far as Series Landies go if you can get them working!!!!

G'day P38arover :)

Nice straight vehicle that you have there Ron :) I thought I reconniased the Chassis No, it was a 2.6 ltre 6cyl vehicle, and that is a rear PTO hanging out the back:D an expensive option, and quite rare, being a"D" suffix chassis it would be about 67/68, with cable operated wipers, and the later 2a gearbox, I notice that the Left rear axle is missing, so it may have just been a broken axle that sidelined it, with a Holden motor fitted it will take 3.54 ratio early 10 spline Range Rover diff centres easily, that would give reasonable road speed, it would probably have a boosted brake system seeing that it was originally a 6cyl and would have 3"wide front brake drums & shoes, the Firewall looks pretty fair, and being a traytop it would be easy to check the chassis, headlights are just standard 7" seal beams on the 67 onward vehicles and they were Negitive earth from new, but would have originally generated, there will be a 4th gear lever, coming out of the side of the transmission tunnel or from the seat box face, that will be the PTO control lever, all the others are standard Series stuff:) the Holden motor isn't rocket science to get going, check with cal415 (I think ) he has some Series 2a stuff up in Newcastle going for free, so you might score some bits like axles,(all Series fit)

Yes, it is missing the rear diff. At least I haven't found it yet. There is a box of stuff on the front seat and I haven't looked in it yet. I did see the headlights, dash, and grille in the cab.

Thanks for the offer, Richard, but I fear it will cost to much to get it to Sydney.

I'll keep an eye open on FleaBay or ask my local LR specialists. Hmm, they did have a Stage 1 they were stripping - I think they only wanted the 4BD1 and gearbox....

UncleHo, I can't see a 4th lever for the PTO. I can see the Black (gears), the yellow and the red.

I note it has a PBR trailer brake control on the dash - it looks like a vacuum control but as I haven't seen one before, I don't know. It allows manual application of the trailer brakes without operating the car brakes.

I had a look at the brakes but I can't see the width of the drum. I'd have to remove a wheel.

That firewall shape in front of the gearbox hump definitely identifies it as being a factory six. Congratulation Ron it looks like an unmolested example. Just tell the missus you heard he was going to scrap it and couldn't bear the thought of a piece of history being destroyed.

As far as I know all the Limestone coloured Series2 Landies in Aust were originally powered by the Landy6.
Landy Andy, I'm not sure the Limestone colour can be categorically connected to the 6 cyl. My other Limestone 109" (253 27731 D ) now dismantled, had a 4 cylinder petrol.
It also had a factory painted LR badge (silk screened)which James Taylor believes is an Oz Only characteristic. Uncle Kevin may recall this being done.

It also came with the "6 cylinder horizontal grille" as I have heard it referred to. Dunno about that one. It may have been some of the last mix 'n match stuff out of the bins. Got an image somewhere.

Here it is.

G'day 4bee :)

Yup! you are right about the colour, Limestone was a factory colour in all vehicles, dark vehicles had Limestone wheel rims, light vehicles had Silver, or Black as an option, and yes, the Horizontal grille bars were only fitted to the 2.6 litre 6 cylinder 2a vehicles as that was the easy way to identify the model,(and let stones in, flyscreen is needed) the Land/Rover badge stencilled on the R/hand front guard was used much later out here than in the UK, some fully imported vehicles still had the alloy plate fixed to the front guard to take the English No plate, this was then stencilled with the Land-Rover name.

Ron.:) That would well be a PBR Vacuum adjuster for a trailer, which adjusts the volume of vacuum to the trailer brakes, it allows you to increase the Vac when, if you have a trailer load of calves for the sale yard the trailer comes on first, when empty the setting is returned to near zero so that the trailer just brakes slightly before the vehicle, there should be a plug type thing at the rear (a small plug on a chain) that closes the connection, all tese service parts should be available from PBR (Aust) P/L (used to be at Campsie/Hurlstone Pk). There will probably be a hole where the PTO selector came through into the Cab, and it would have thad the Horizontal bar grille originally:)

Whatever you do, DO NOT put a rover/10-spline rear in it. Either fit a salisbury or 24-spline axles, etc... After I broke my 2nd axle I put a salisbury in and I have never regretted it.

If you can pick up the axles (drum-drum) from a stage 1 that would be a good option.

I'll ask - I know of a Stage 1 that might be being stripped. It depends on what they want for the rear end. Probably too much. :(

Hi Richard, I probably need the complete diff centre - not hub to hub.

Will 3.54 gears fit in a 4.7 carrier?

However, I'm not sure what I need until I empty the car out to check over the spares.

I couldn't do that today as my wife was home so it stayed hidden in the garage. No, she still hasn't seen it. Fortunately, she didn't come out back whilst I was sorting the stuff that I'm clearing at the Expo.

My preference is to go straight to 3.54 centres rather than 4.7 diffs with the Holden. It won't be an off-roader per se, more a useful second, er, third car.

If it is a real good 'un under the skin, I may do a good job on the rebuild (not to Dinty standard but still reasonable). There isn't a lot of bodywork to fix.

The flange that the ring gear mounts to on the centre is in a different spot. You can fit a 4.7 ring gear to a 3.54 centre with a spacer, but not vice versa.

Good to know about the straight fit. I'll chat to the bloke I know about a 3.54 Stage 1 rear end from the vehicle he's stripping. Hopefully it won't be too exxy. I assume that a Stage 1 Salisbury rear axle assembly would bolt straight in.

Re the SIIA, I'll run it on 4.7 diffs at this stage. It's not important to have 3.54 diffs for the general use that I plan for it.

I'm getting more enthused about a body-off restoration. I knew I shouldn't have stopped off at Dinty's a few weeks back. :(

G'day P38arover :)

The Salisbury will bolt straight in as a Drum to Drum set-up, as the chassis is just a Series 3 unit, and mounts are the same, the rear tailshaft might need to be shortened as the Salisbury pinion nose is longer, it might be worth trying to get the front brake assembly (backing plate and drum assy)if the price is right, as they will come in handy for yours (same 3" drum /brake assy) also the brake pedalbox/mastercylinder and booster is interchangeable;) If you vehicle has not got the Booster fitted (it was optional back then) you will need the R/Hfront guard which has a cut-away section for the booster assy to fit in same as 110's do.

If the Landie was in the backyard, I'd be really in trouble. At least it's out of sight. I don't know where the battery fits - that's the first job.

I crawled under it yesterday and it looks pretty sound. There is, unfortunately, no PTO. There is only a propshaft from about halfway back and out the rear of the rear crossmember.

I'm not quite sure where to start - front or back. Take off the tray and clean up all the back end and paint the rear half of the chasis (and fit my new shocks!) or strip the front end and do it.

The back might be quicker and I'll see something for my efforts.

G'day P38arover :)

The battery on a 2a Landy will be in one of 2 places, on the right hand side between the steering box and the radiator on a battery tray that incorporates the Oil Bath Aircleaner, OR under the Pass seat, lift the seat pad and there will be alid with a front clip/lever, the cables will come through from the engine bay, Is ther a blank-off plate at the back of the G/box-transfer, if not when you have it running and engage gear it will empty the transfer on the backyard, the blank off plate is about 6" dia held on by 6 nuts, it also has a small roller bearing in the centre of the inner face, there is apaper gasket, but a Vita-Brits packet type will do;) gearbox/transfer oil is EP90, check clutch/brake fluid, (should be a tin dual brake/clutch reservoir) if early series 2/2a starter is press type under dash solenoid.

G'day 4bee :)

....... the Land/Rover badge stencilled on the R/hand front guard was used much later out here than in the UK,...

Ron.:) That would well be a PBR Vacuum adjuster for a trailer, which adjusts the volume of vacuum to the trailer brakes, it allows you to increase the Vac when, if you have a trailer load of calves for the sale yard the trailer comes on first, when empty the setting is returned to near zero so that the trailer just brakes slightly before the vehicle, there should be a plug type thing at the rear (a small plug on a chain) that closes the connection, all tese service parts should be available from PBR (Aust) P/L (used to be at Campsie/Hurlstone Pk). ....

Sorry for coming in on this part of the thread so very very late.

The stenciled "Land-Rover" on the front guard was an ideosyncracy of Annand & Thompson's in Brisbane. They applied the stencils from the earliest Series 1's right through the Series 2a's. But I don't believe that I have seen it on a Series 3. (Could be wrong however)

The PBR vacuum trailer brake unit is a very useful system and much better than the contemporary electric trailer brake units. The biggest problem is the cost of installing the system, as it has to be fitted into the brake hydraulic system, have a vacuum acumulator tank and then the vacuum line to the rear, very difficult on the plastic dash type vehicles.

As suggested before you turn the "T" handle to adjust the setting of the brakes to the load on the trailer, then it is automatic and applies the brakes when you push the pedal. For an emergency stop you can pull the handle back to apply the brakes on the trailer only.

Unfortunately they are incompatible with ABS.

The trailer components are cheap and can convert any hydraulic or cable operated over-ride system to an integrated braking system.

You can often pick up brand new bits at swap meets for next to nothing.

Ron

If electric trailer brakes are better than vacuum/air systems, one has to ask why semi trailers don't have electric brakes?

Independant trailer brakes are always better that over-run brakes, because by applying the trailer brakes first the vehicle/trailer combination will stop in a straight line and the brakes remain on while the brake pedal is depressed. Over-run trailer brakes require, the car to be decelerating suficiently to overcome the spring in the coupling, then the brakes in the trailer come on taking the weight off the coupling, releasing the trailer brakes etc, so trailer braking is intermittant with poor safety and efficiency.

A friend and I are currently building a car trailer rated at 4 tonnes. It will have dual line vacuum over hydraulic (breakaway system). This will allow us to legally tow Range Rovers and Defenders on the trailer. The dual line system is the same as the one on your S2a although it has an additional vacuum supply line to the rear to charge the reservoir on the trailer.

Most car trailers, even ones with brakes and particularly hire trailers are only rated at 2 tonnes Gross Trailer Mass, although looking at their size you could park the Queen Mary on them are only legally able to carry something about the 1 ton weight limit because the trailer weighs almost a ton. When the GTM of the trailer goes over 2 tonnes the trailer must have "independant brakes" which are systems such as the PBR unit on your S2a, with the additional vacuum charge line.

The down side of the vacuum trailer brake system over electric brakes is the cost of installation. This is not your problem.

The decision to remove the system should be based upon what you are actually going to gain and are you ever going to tow a trailer with the vehicle? Remember that many heavier or older caravans still have the vacuum brake system fitted as do some hire car trailers.

Unfortunately they are incompatible with ABS.

Ron's new Series has ABS? Rover really were ahead of the game  :D
FWIW - I'd say its work keeping the system, if nothing else for the historical value.

Excellent information!

I was only removing the brakes as I didn't think I'd ever tow a trailer with them (and to tidy it up under the bonnet).

I didn't realise they were still used in car/4WD-drawn trailers.

I doubt I'd ever seriously tow with the Series - I'd use the P38A or 300Tdi Disco in preference. The Series might occasionally tow a trailer of rubbish on a Clean Up day (it would be good then as it has a tray.)

My wife was returning from the shops this arvo when she came across the previous owner of the IIA out in his front yard.

She asked if he was the bloke who gave me the car.

He said "Not me! I know nothing about it!", before bursting into... :D

Well, I think this has to go. I've done nothing to it and with the death of my son, some priorities have changed. I can't see me getting to it in a hurry. My wife has asked if I'd prefer to restore my son's Super Minx. It is registered - I've been driving it to work.

Nearly 5 years on and the IIA is running!. It started quite easily. Today we fitted a new fuel pump and some hose, put fuel in the tank and started it.

After freeing up the brakes, fitting a diff and some rear axles, we drove it onto a trailer and it has departed with its new owner to his property.

Elisabeth is glad to be rid of the garden ornament. I've never done anything to it, so it was good to see it go. Now to check where it was parked. The dog, when she was a pup, used to like to steal my tools and hide under the Landie with them.
