My old Treo 600 is about to die. Battery is not keeping charge and the touch-screen, well... you need to punch it for it to do anything.

I kinda like the PDA and phone in one so... any suggestions or comments for a new (or used - I am on a tight budget) PDA/phone in one?

If you like the Treo, I think I still have my old 600 somewhere which you can have for not much money.

Since then, I've had a Treo 650, XDA2 (Probably called something different here, but an old 2nd gen iMate), XDA Mini-s (I think an iMate JasJam) and am now waiting on a new iMate which finally has 3/3.5G for the data, but no inbuilt GPS. If I was buying myself (As opposed to work supplied) I think I'd also look at the new Treo, and one of the HP's with GPS as well - but none of these will match the "tight budget" requirement.

i got a freeby Treo 750 from work its pretty good does the blutooth gps thing as well. Dunno how much they are though.

The only draw backs I have found is that the maximum miniSD card it will accept is 2gb fills up a bit quick with mp3's but I guess that's my fault ;)

Oh and the batter only lasts about 3 days more or less which doesnt sound bad but my nokia mobile lasted a week easy but it had limited functionality. I need an in car charger.

My Mrs has an n95 and she loves it. I have an HP iPaq 6950, very buggy, heaps of resets required but good when it works. The phone on it is not great but works with both 3g and next g.

If I was to buy another one it would probably be the new Mio.

Finally managed to prise my new iMate JasJam out of the IT lot now they've finished installing all the corporate stuff on it, and spent most of the day setting it up and having a play. Very impressed overall, much easier to use than the slightly earlier version I had in the UK (O2 XDA Mini-S, but another HTC device at the end of the day) with some nice improvements in the buttons to make WM5 more usable without always needing the stylus.

Also stuck TomTom6 on it, and with an old and cheap BT GPS from eBay a while back, it works great.

What are people using for off-road mapping software on these things?

OziExplorer would seem to be the most versatile program for 4WD touring. It was actually written by a guy who wanted something for his own 4WD touring.
I've just bought my license for it and am using it on an Ipaq rx5965 PDA which has inbuilt GPS.
Oziexplorer doesn't come with any maps - it is just the moving map program. The good thing is you can scan in and calibrate your own paper maps if you want to - I have an extensive collection of paper maps so this is a great feature for me. It can be a bit laborious using an A4 scanner, but if you had access to an A3 or larger scanner it would greatly simplify it. If you can't be bothered with that, you can buy a huge range of maps already scanned and calibrated ( eg Hema, NATMAP etc ).
You can download the trial version from his website to give it a try out ( get the trial version not the shareware version). You will need to also download the OziExlorer CE version if you want to try it out on your phone. Oh, it will need to run Windows Mobile that's the only problem.
