Hi Gurus,

I'm new to the world of LRs and am looking at buying a late model Disco 2 (auto/diesel) to tow a 2T (tare) caravan. Plus I want to modify it a bit to play in the mud/sand/dirt/rocks etc etc.

Can someone please point me in the direction of finding specs for Disco 2 - power/torque/towing capacities etc.

Will an auto/diesel tow the caravan comfortably/safely especially up hills.

Would longevity be an issue from the 2.5l diesel especially for towing duties???

Is parts availability an issue out in the bush compared to say a Toyota LC100?

This is a good Tech resource (http://www.discoveryownersclub.org/tech/)

And then of course Redbook (http://www.redbookasiapacific.com/au/vehicle/index.php'make=LAND&family=LCDISCOVE)

in my experience in towing my camper trailer have had no problems in looking for power ,longetivity regarding the td5 , is prity much like any engine has it been hammered by the previous owner has it been serviced regarlly,,

a well serviced td5 will not let you down
as to the fuel economy there is no comparison to the LC100,you will almost half the LC fuel economy in the td5

i collect fire wood at the bottom of my property and its a steep drive out with tractor ruts washouts and steps ups,out of a gorge i select low 2/3 depending how big the load is and she has not battled yet and this gets done every 2nd week [my wife keeps on asking me to get the excavator to make the road good ,,,but what fun is in that then]

I have towed a camper trailer with the disco fully loaded from sydney to perth to darwin to alice back to darwin to cairns to gold coast in one 2.5 yrs trip in a then stock 2000s2td5 disco with no major problems i had break downs yes but it was expected on a trip like that and where fixed either roadside or in smal town mech shops with a few parts freighted in ,but any part for any make would have to be freighted in
YOU WILL NOT HAVE A PROBLEM TOWING WITH A TD5

The TD5 in standard trim will tow as well as the TD LC100 and get better economy.

My TD5 has been towing it's whole life with no probs at all (1.3t camper trailer) and an 18' van before that, now has 153,000ks on the clock.

The auto is best for the heavier trailers, aspecially if starting on steep hills.

Hi,
I tow a 1.9 T (Tare) 2.5 T loaded up off road van with my TD5. Towed it from Melbourne where we picked it at up the factory back to Karratha WA.

The TD5 did not like a headwind especially accross the Nullabour with the van on but after an ECU upgrade and the best spent $440 ever, it now tows without any problem even in a headwind with the 21.5 offroad van fully loaded up.

With the ECU upgrade it is a fantastic tow horse and I average 14l/100 klms with the van on. Before the ECU upgrade it was 15l/100klms with it on the back. I guess more power equals less pressure on the accelerator pedal.

Go for the SLS option on the TD5 for towing, it is magic. Also I have a 750 kg Hayman Reece load levelling kit I fit up to the MY2003 Disco for towing. Works well with the SLS, also no cracks or any other problem with the factory tow bar assembly on the 2003 model after towing 10,000 klms.

I know it is not reccomended by Landrover with the SLS but it works really well and I have had no problem as yet and 1,000 klms at least have been over absolutely shocking corragated roads up here in the Pilbara.

The MY2003 Disco has 80,000 on the clock with no major problems apart from the origional Wabco ABS unit being replaced under warranty.

We use our Disco 2 to tow Beatrice, our trailer boat. She weighs in at around 3 tonnes on the trailer. Never had a problem going up hills and the brakes are excellent for making you stop on the other side.

Go for it :o
