Thought I might try my first post to you learned guys with my Disco story. Well loved 95 300 Tdi manual with 200,00 kms on the clock. It had a clutch overhaul with all the bits 40,000 ago including a a new clutch master cylinder and damper, however , lately, it seems to have a bit of a rumble coming from the engine bay area / bell housing. when de-clutching whilst changing up through the gears, when the engine is being pushed. Gear changes at around 2500 rpm. I intially thought it was a clutch problem so I took it to a LR clutch / gearbox expert. I was told that there was nothing wrong with the drive train, and the coment was it was down on power ( didn't seem that bad to me ). It then went to my LR mechanic who put the car on the dyno and did a compression test. Tappets were adjusted new lift pump fitted ( old one leaked ) and the compression test came back with 2 cylinders at 300 psi and 2 at 275 psi. I followed the good advise on this site an adjusted the accelerator cable and she seems better on power now. The rumbling noise is still there. Can't seemt find anyone one who can diagnose it.The vehicle has had regular oil changes and has been well looked after. Maybe a harmonic balancer issue. Any thoughts or ideas would be welcome. Thanks for your time and great site. cheers

Does it rumble at idle and in neutral or only in gear? Was the release bearing replaced?.It could be something totaly unrelated like a uni on the front drive shaft. After 40k I would look elsewhere. Pat

300 and 275psi???:eek:I hope there is something wrong with their compression guage, as these should be about 400 to 450 psi.......

Just looked ar the MotoMeter graph recording. Number 1 @ 300 psi , 2 @ 275 , 3 @ 300 psi and 4 @ 275 psi. I was told that although the compression is down, that it was ' uniform ' wear.I'm no authority on this matter so your advise is more than welcome. The guys who did the check only do LR's and seem to know what they're doing. They've been doing them for a long time. I was trying to find out what the average compression should be for a motor that's got 200,000 kms on the clock, had regular oil / filter changes. Interested to know what the compression should be for brand new motor too .I've enjoyed the vehicle for 7 years, and apart from the previous owner experiencing the timing belt being thrown off at 70,000 km resulting in replacing bent push rods, nothing else has been done on the motor apart from oil hose replacements, and another timing belt ( not due failure ) I can't recall ever having had the head ' tightened ' up. Should this be done at intervals ? Doesn't leak coolant and the motor itself doesn't leak any oil ( unusual you might say ).Doesn't seem that much down on power since when I first bought the vehicle with 80,000 kms on it. Just had a closer listen to the noise, maybe closed to a wooshing noise in lieu of rumbling, it actually comes in when de-clutching up through the gears at 2000 rpm. You hear some of the Jap turbos like Nissan GTR's / Subies with ' whoosh ' type noises coming from the turbo waste gate mods. when changing gears. My turbo tested ok and spools at around 1750 rpm. The the noise only happens when to engine is under load, I'm wondering if maybe it's a leaking turbo hose. Couldn't find an splits in them. The bottom intercooler replaced recently, however the 90 degree elbow off the turbo is orginal and somewhat soft, and will be replaced with a silicon job. Drive train seems ok. Anyway, as a picture is as good as thousand words, got to find a way of posting a ' sound ' clip of the noise. Maybe I can talk the cheese and kisses in hanging the side with a microphone for me. Love me love my LR.
