GDay,
made the mistake of checking over my vehicle ready for the trip from Canberra to expo in the morning .... the front most belt is all ratty on the inside, power sterring pully seems to have moved forward and is chopping out the belt. Too late for local repairers to be open.
Is the pump cactus?
Do I risk a 700k trip on Sunday?
Help please......

The pulley isn't loose or the mount? The pumps aren't known to cause much problems. Pat

Hi Michael,

In my experience this is a classic Tdi power steering pump failure where the bearing and shaft part company in the pump, and the drive shaft eventually comes out the front of the pump shredding the belt and leaving you stranded...
Do not drive 7 km let alone 700.:(

Sorry, JC

thanks for the replies.
Justin, is it a rebuild job, or do I get a new or s/h one?

Sorry michael, but rebuilding these is not an option. S/H would want to be very cheap, as they don't last long.

Put it this way, I wouldn't rely on one to run a OX winch for example.
I have a second hand one here, but what use is that for you tomorrow?:(

Justin, so like steering boxes ... buy a new one!

The Mechanic from one of the local LR repairers, who I spoke with, said that they sent them away for rebuilding ... sounds like he does not have much experience!

-----Either that or he likes doing warranty work! I agree they are expensive new,(check British 4x4 's website for an example price, ) but not worth the hassle of warranty claims or having to buy another 'rebuilt' one in 12.5months time:mad:

no i recon hes right to send it away for a rebuild...

I can rebuild them at work and we just XX them and send them back for deeper level repairs then fit a new one...

the tolerances are a bugger to work with the seals are worse if a seals spun and scored the casing its more cocking around....

If you get them when thefront seal first starts to leak and send them off for rebuild they should come back in good nick but if the shaft has pulled my SOP is to replace the whole damn thing.

Id keep a rebuilt one on shelf ready to go as a cheap spare for just such a case but then Id want to refit a brand new one.

Anything is possable.....

And the best way to guarentee sucess is to turn up to someone like me with a case of booze (the prefered booze of the someone you're about to victimise) and the pump you want fitted and say

"mate, betcha a carton you cant get this to work on this engine"

i have fitted a vn commodore pump to my tdi 200 disco.had old mate make me up a new plate to mount it,it has been on for about 4 years.its is a bugger to adjust drive belt.but apart from that it works fine.i was quoted $1200 dollars to replace with original in darwin.the conversion cost me about $400.i believe the price of pumps has dropped reciently though so check around first

I've only just noticed this thread - any chance of getting some more details and/or pics of your conversion on the 200 tdi please?

Cheers

Replaced mine earlier this year with a brand new pump from Toorak Tractor Co. in Braeside (Melb.) $295.00. No changeover, just chucked the old one out (after I pulled it apart for a squizz, bugger trying put it back together let alone fix it)!

Couple of hours and you are away.

Warning, don't mess around with this thing. Fix it NOW! I didn't first time around and it cost me an extra belt AND a water pump.
