View Full Version : Am I Being Unreasonable

A few days ago I placed the highest bid on a car on ebay but was unsuccessful due to the reserve not being met. I have sent two e-mails to the seller indicating that I was the highest bidder and seeking to possibly negotiate a purchase price. While I certainly accept a purchase may not be able to be negotiated, the seller has not responded to my e-mails - he surely would have checked to see if his item sold and would certainly have recieved my first e-mail.
Am I being unresaonable in expecting at least some sort of response within a few days and being the highest bidder, at least have first refusal on the car.
Any thoughts would be appreciated

It's surprising how many people are that slow to check. Wait a bit longer but also write it off as a no win.

He/she could have shot through for a few days, so don't break out in a cold sweat just yet, Gazz.;)

You're being reasonable, but as above it might just take time.
A lot of people, though, don't know auctions - hopefully the seller isn't among the ignorant (however you interpret "ignorant.")
I hope it turns out well for you.

Well, I reckon that if someone puts an item for sale on eBay and doesn't respond to emails then they are ignorant ar$eholes, if they cant be bothered checking their listings and replying to valid, relevant queries from someone that wants to give them money, then they shouldn't list IMHO, Regards Frank.

I've heard of people using ebay to find buyers and then negotiation with them afterwards as their strategy. So to not respond suprises me.
Maybe he doesn't really want to sell it. He's now saying to the wife ... sorry dear didn't get close. We'll have to keep it. :)

Ebay messages are notoriously problematic. For some reason I don't receive any Ebay messages to my email account. If I want to see them I have to check via Ebay messages page.
From my experience selling stuff this must happen a lot. If you have a previous message try the sellers direct email address. I don't know if Ebay will give you their contact details as highest-but-not-winning bidder. As winning bidder it isn't hard to request full contact details.
Cheers

No mate you are being reasonable, but as the others said some people can be really slow to check, and quite often many people who list on ebay arent all that computer savy. Give it a few days, maybe even a week. Its a pain i know but if they really want to sell the car they will contact you. Matt

Thanks guys - I guess I wait and hope I don't miss out on buying for a price within my price range.

Maybe it got sold elsewhere and he doesn't want to tell?
Seems to me the polite thing to do would be to reply in some way though.....

Its a simple enough thing to put your mobile number on the listing, if you are the seller. If its something I am really keen on I usually email the seller requesting this number as I want a "chat" about the item well before the sale date.
If they dont respond, then I dont bid:)
At least I can re assure myself they would have been difficult sellers.

We got kicked off Ebay as we had some trouble at one stage as I bought some stuff for the Jeep and I tried contacting the guy selling it to organise pick up as aust post is unreliable around here and he wouldnt return my emails so I tried to call him and the mobile number given was not connected.
I msg'd him through ebay, by email (same msg) about 10 times in a week and then I got an email back saying that I couldnt pick it up and it was post only.
I asked if he could send it by courier rather than aust post and still got nothing and then he gave us negative feedback and put a strike on us.
In trying to sort the strike out, ebay kicked me permanantly and now every time my creditcard number goes on ebay, even if a friend is buying something for me then they get a temporary ban for a few days or a week.
Ebay's contact system sux and their dispute resolution system sux more.

Trouble with that is Frank, as my sig line says, life is what happens...some possibles
His house burnt down
His computer crashed
His dog died
His wife left him
and of course he could just be an ar$ehole
But you have to give people the benefit of doubt sometimes too :D
I'll take dibs on the last 2, Regards Frank

eBay Australia has no body on the ground, no phone number, no Postal address, no nothing and they couldn't care less whether you get ripped off or not, they actually make it easy for crooks to operate, I had a ba$tard rip me off for $3K on a car deal, contacted eBay for his contact details and got "Perth WA" and a mobile phone number that of course was not connected, eBay said tough titties, they are the lowest form of life in the commercial world and I only deal thru them cause there's no one else, be very wary of ebay, cause it breeds crooks, Regards Frank.

conversly, I've had stuff on there that I've made very clear is for local pickup only, but people have still bid without contacting first to ask if it's ok, from the other side of the country and I've had to pack it up and post it for them. PITA.

I've had it happen on a few occasions and yes it certainly gets my goat. I am currently bidding on some Discovery Alloys and have sent two emails ref freight / courier as an option for pickup etc to the seller and heard nothing. Thing is I know they have replied to questions after I sent mine on other items they are selling. I would be happy with a "No sorry mate Freight / courier pickup is not an option".
Just plain @#%&*^ rude!
Where did common manners go?
Better luck next time.:)
