G-Day fellow AULRO's,

This is my first post of many I'm sure as I am now the owner of a 1997 Discovery TDI.

Is it possible to remove the factory Roof Rails? I have come upon a very good condition and very well priced Roof Rack however it follows the roof line and I'm sure it won’t fit with the factory Roof Rails attached.

Any help muchly appreciated.

:)

Yes they can be removed as they bolted on through the roof. You need to pull back some of the roof lining and roof some other trim, possibly damaging it and then get some sort of plugs to full the holes and make the roof water proof.

Hi Toffa,

As Garry has indicated, it's quite possible but is not for the feint-hearted, as the headlining really needs to come down. This is not necessarily a bad thing though. Many, if not most, Disco headlinings of that vintage will be looking a bit sad by now anyway, unless they've previously be re-lined.

So, if the head lining is sagging or coming away from the edges, especially at the top of the windscreen, you can kill two (or more!) birds with the one stone, albeit at some cost.

If you do drop/replace the headlining, have a good look at the "alpine light" windows in the back. If they show any signs of leakage, replace the seals and have any rust treated while there's good access to everything.

We had our roof re-sprayed last year (it's spent most of it's life un-garaged in northern-Oz) and had the headlining re-done and some minor rust spots around the alpine lights attended to while it was all apart.

By the way, congratulations on your 'new' Disco. Heaps of good info on here to keep it running and in good nick. When (not if!) you want some more go from it, keep an eye out for a copy of my tuning notes or email me direct.

Cheers for the link containing all the detailed info.

I will be giving it a crack as soon as I have the Rack.

I will let you know how it goes.
