What is the best oil or the best grease to run in the CV's on a Disco 1.

I know there are plenty of differing opinions on this but Ive done a search and cant find what I want to know.

Basically I need to know, is it gear oil but what grade, one shot (what ever that is) or running grease.

Also, I heard some people were discarding the inner stub axel seal so that the bearings would run in oil, but that then would probably require a higher oil level in the swivel housing.

It may sound like a dumb question from a mechanic but Ive been using gear oil and just greasing the wheel bearings as per normal but I came accross an issue with this the other day as if the inner seal leaks then it washes out the grease from the bearings and this causes the bearings to heat up and fail.

So this is why Im asking what you guys are using and have had luck with.

Thanks in advance.

the bearings should run happily in diff oil, one rear of my disco runs in oil the other is greased, havn't had the time to replace the worn axle seal! slack me.
have a look at how many holdens and falcons have their rear bearings running diff oil.
on the front is just the same.
check out dranged, he has converted his rangie to run oil filled front hubs
and the diff oil is castrol epx 80w/90, or anything else.

I use 100% moreys engine oil stabilizer in the cv
My 82 Rangie did (now sold) and is still doing 525k with original cv and wheel bearings.
The above is only from my experience others may differ.

Yep... My Disco ran that too...

Defender is now going to oil bath once I get inclined to pull them down (they need a service)...

I prefer oil lubed hubs....

Thanks guys for the quick response, Im going to try to get onto doing it this week.

So running oil stabilizer, do you have to raise the oil level higher than the hole in the swivel, and how much higher, 100ml, 150ml higher or not bother.

What else should I know?
