Autometer, just pick one of the better ranges. They survive anything.

Thanks guys.incisor Vdo is the brand i have mainly been looking at but didnt know if they were any good. does anyone know a rough price for VDO gauges ?? also where would be the best place to mount gauges on a Td5 Defender with the older style of dash(like a tdi) not the newer console type.
Thanks Regards Adrian

Is for Land Rover? Smith's gauges.
Good enough for Vincent, Jag, Bentley. Good enough for my farm truck.:p
VDO? Nice.
Don't know where you are, but, there is a VDO distributer on Port Road in Adelaide.
If that helps.
Shorty.

If you want VDO, get them here (http://www.egauges.com) (Which I found after I'd paid nearly as much for cheap copies locally!) Only downside is I couldn't find a metric version for all the gauges...
To solve the mounting issue, I put one of these (http://www.mudstuff.co.uk/Dashconsole.html) in, which also gave me somewhere to put the UHF and a few extra switches.

G'day Folks :)
VDO instruments were founded in Frankfurt Germany in 1921, and are of very good quality, try VDO Instruments Australia Pty/Ltd Head Office 115 Northern Rd West Hiedelberg Vic 3081 or you could try VDO .com.au, they do Automotive, Industrial, Marine and Aviation, Commercial instruments. ;)
cheers

VDO are the best IMHO, but in my Rangie I put Speco (Taiwanese made VDO!!!)
Speco are well priced and the 2 inch (52mm) are very similar to the Standard Defender ones.

Will any/all these aftermarket gauges wire straight up to a TD5, or will I need brand specific sender unit to suit?
Thanks,
Tod.

Fuel gauge won't work with the stock LR sender - you'll need to put a new sender unit down through the top of the tank t make it work.
Temp gauge needs a matching sender, easy swap with the stock LR one.
Rev counter will plug directly into the back of the alternator if I'm not mistaken.

I fitted the VDO gauges in my ex Defe in the MUD (http://www.aulro.com/app/showphoto.php/photo/13449/title/mud-console/cat/500) consol
For parts have a look HERE (http://www.howardinstruments.com.au/)

Thanks Mike_ie,
Funny how I always realise the specifics I leave out only after I get a response to my posts.:bangin:
Temp gauge is the one I'm changing out. A new sender it is.

Pick a style and meter movement that you can read at a glance... Best if there is a bit of distance between the marks around the 'normal'. - easier for you to pick up a change of position.

In my home made centre piece i have 2x volt meters[2 batteries],oil temp, oil pressure, water temp, boost and tacho all vdo and sourced off the net mostly from ebay.us, also digital egt from auber, the vdo gauges are made all over the world from indonesia to germany but i believe to a high standard, extra gauges can cause extra worry but is cheaper than a rebuild. On a side note my oil temp[sender in sump plug] runs at 180 but when the oil hits 5000ks it runs at 220-did this with old engine and does it with new, old was on magnatec and new is penrite 15./50, i always change the oil/filter at approx 5000 anyway... 300tdi

My searching skills are letting me down this evening... Can someone tell me the thread size/type for the water temp sender on a 300TDI so I know which replacement sender to get? Cheers.

If you're using a replacement VDO temperature gauge, you'll need to use the 323-095 temperature sender - 1/8-27 NPT...

Someone else has already done the hard work:
Suitable gauges and senders for the 300tdi (http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php'showtopic=14902#entry154025)

Ah huh! Thanks. 1/8-27 NPT was one of 3 different answers I found on google.
I'm settling on 1/8-27 NPT. :)
