Hi All,
After doing another job I need a Little help please?
When I dropped the cable out of the Hand brake handle I didnt take any notice of how it went into the handle/lever.
I know from the pics and manuals it just says to wack the end of the cable into the handle, line up holes and put clevis pin in and retaining clip and thats it......but there doesnt seem to be any room next to the release button pin that runs down to the rachet mach to get in there ie very tight fir, if at all.
Do I just jamb the end of the cable past the pin and line up the holes? or is there another way, but I cant see how it could go any other way in.......
I have a few pics of the hand brake cable & handle of what Im trying to say.....:p

well I forced the cable end past the rod and into the handle, but its impossible to get the clevis pin into the handle (very very tight), plus the relese pin is now bent all out of shape......
Got the ****s so Ive just got a longer clevis pin & retaining ring and fitted the cable to the outside of the handle for now.....But you guest it the hand brake isnt working now ie need to pull it almost right up, no rachet clicks (used to be 3-4 clicks for fully on) and the relese button isnt coming back out.......:twisted:
So at the moment there is a small tupperware container with mints in it wedgeing the hand brake on.....:p
Umm maybe I should have bought a Patrol after all........:wallbash::wallbash::imwithstupid: naa bugger that, then what would I do with all my spare time :bat::wallbash::bangin::wacko:

It took me ten or twenty minutes to get it right, I tried so many things I cannot exactly remember how I fixed it. I manages to align the cable and the hole and then slipped the pin.
If this does not work, Try to lift the cable, or release the cable so it's not as tight, this will give you more cable to work with.
cheers and good luck

Ok thanks, so you are saying that the cable head does in fact go's past the relese rod to line up with the holes in the handle?
When I did that I noted that the cable head is about 8mm wide but the gap either side of the rod in the handle is only about 3mm , so I really forced it in there, but just cant get it right, as I had to get ready for work etc ;), But I might have another go Wednesday.
PS I did pull the cable out as far as I could get it and held it place with vicegrips.....

I spent ages trying to get the pin back in, I could see straight through but no joy, so I went back to using a smaller dia clevis pin.........but the rachet part of the system still isnt working at all, so I still need to jamb something under the handle to get park brake.......any ideas please someone?
I did tension the cable up a bit, looks to be abouit the same hight as before but just without the rachet locking bit...... https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Ok I know Im talking to myself here , but Ive had a win.
Stupid me didnt know that the rod thats connected to the relese button, is fixed to a small tab which acts like cam of sorts. I though it was only either up or down
So the tab can move around 360dec just like a conrod on a crank.....
All I had to do was move the cam/tab bit until it up upwards and I slipped the clevis pin easy !
but I think I need to ajust up the cable now, becasue I can only get one little click when its pulled up now with the handle, but wont stay there....am I getting close?:p

Sorry mate, I've just seen this thread. Yes, it's a bit of a bugger to do.
I had to disconnect it to remove the console of the Disco to fix the auto gear change display thingie.

I disconnected the cable from the lever, to remove the console, when I wanted to run some electrical wires.
It was difficult to get the clevis pin back in. Would have been easier if I had backed off the adjustment a bit.
I used the blade of a screwdriver to line up the holes (from the opposite side) while inserting the pin.

With a bit of patience this method works well

Ok, saga so far, ajusted the H/B drum and cable below the handle as stated in the workshop manual, all works as it should, but the rachet doesnt hold the hand brake on still:(:confused:
Is there a spring or something in the handle to hold the small rachet tab to the main rachet part contected to the main body of the H/B ?
I cant see a spot for a spring and nothing fell out when pull I pulled it apart  I did however prised the release rod to one side in my first attempt in getting the cable back in........ could that be it?
Any ideas please , the wife is giving me the poo's about it, but I refuse to give in and take it to a tech to pay him a huge amount just to hear "Its a Pommie car, what do you expect":twisted:

Some of the things that you have been describing don't ring true with my memory - it has been some time since I played with mine.
I'll be surprised if it is not because something is assembled incorrectly.
I have another here somewhere, so I tried to find it to check what may be happening, but couldn't put my hand on it.
Sorry I couldn't help, perhaps I might find it at the weekend.

if you have lifted the handle all the way to the top of its range of movement (after disconnecting the cable) the ratchet thingie will have inverted and no longer be in contact with the teeth that it is supposed to grip into to hold the handle up
found that one out the hard way :(
trying to remember how to fix it.
from memory i lifted the handle to the top or its range of movement and just push the ratchet mechanism forward with your finger, then holding the button in lower the handle down
you should not have to prise the release rod out of the way to put the clevis pin back in, if the ratchet mech. is up the right way the release rod will be outta the way
good luck with it

ok thanks blokes for your help.
Ive spend another hour or two playing.
Ive found if I put forward pressure on the rachact cam, then pull the handle upwards the rachet holds the brake on no probs.....but as soon as I press the button it falls down and wont hold in place if I try and pull on again, I need to stick a screw driver in and push the rachet cam forward again...
So it must the linkage in the handle is bent or the spring is sticking in the button end of the handle.....
Any idea how to get the rubber hand grip off the HB handle? Has anybody ever had it off before?

The rubber handle just pulls off. You may have to twist as you pull it.

Well I pulled it off with a bit of sweat and a few choice words, that usally helps https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ , I must scare things when I spit the dummy http://www.lrocv.com.au/forum/images/smiles/icon_eek.gif
Ok enough BS.....looks like I cant get to the spring at the end of the handle without pulling the HB off the floor, then drilling out the pin that holds the small cam thing to the relese rod.
So I guess next thing is to is play with the rod and try and straighen it because I bent it up a Little when I first tryed to fit cable, all those weeks ago......... http://www.lrocv.com.au/forum/images/smiles/icon_cry.gif https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Just need to bend it a certain way and see if its better or worse.
Or find another whole HB and fit that.....But I will try the bending and swearing a bit more yet https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Well, spill the beans, what was the problem??
It was the release buton !
What had happend is , when I was stuffing around trying to fit the cable on, I must have bent the rod that the button is on. So when the handle was in the off possie the button was jambed hard against the inside wall of the handle, so basicly jambed the rod and rachet cam tight so the spring couldent do its job. Thats the bit that got me becasue when the handle was upright the rod was central, but down it was jambed hard.......
I took button off, cleaned it up with wet & dry paper because there where marks and cuts etc, and bent the rod straight again.....oh and a bit of Lube.
Fixed, all I had to do was ajust the cable a bit as it was a little loose, ie 5 clicks to be on, back to 3-4 clicks to be on........:D.....thank god for that !
Thanks for your help Blokes
