How do you know which axle housing you have in a Disco1?

I'm about to get some oil seals for the swivel housing (FTC3401 that seals the sphere bit).

However I have previously looked for the housing numbers but can't find them.

For example the front is either JA032850 or earlier or JA032851 and later.

I think I need the
Swivel housing seal 8mm - front axle non ABS from JA032850 - DISCOVERY 1 (http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/DISCOVERY_1/Axle/Swivel_housing_seal_8mm_-_front_axle_non_ABS_from_JA032850.html)
FTC3401

However where are the serial numbers of the front and rear axle housings?

On my P38A, the numbers are stamped on with what looks like a dot matrix printer in steel!

Looking at the Four Wheel Drives catalogue:

D1
Rear Axle: stamped on the rear of the LHS axle tube
Front Axle: stamped on the top of the LHS axle tube

The D2 has them in a different place.

BTW, the JA number is the VIN, not the axle number. The axle no. will be something like 32L03120B (petrol) or 42L0..... (diesel)

Utemad,

FTC3401 will fit your D1, as it is an 'MA' VIN, (and M comes after J......:D)

It was the Four Wheel Drives catalogue that first alerted me to the fact there where numbers on the axle housings. However I could never find them. However if they are dot matrix style numbers then that is probably why I couldn't find them. With the oil and dirt and all that ;)

I didn't think of the JA in terms of VIN numbers (yes mine is an MA) as I thought there was only LA and MA VINs

Thanks.
