Selectro Free Wheeling Hubs!

What are peoples opinions on these free wheeling hubs. Are the a good quality brand? I have a set of them and i am just wondering if they are worth cleaning up and putting on my landy.

In the 70s , they where all you could get, oh and the Warn ones.


That was when they where a must have accessory.

Selecto Free Wheel Hubs were a Landrover approved accessory, and they are quite good, as is AVM brand, but when they are fitted it is advisable to engage them for 50 miles every month, so as to lubricate the Swivel Hub Bushes and negate wear in the front D/shaft, I have had AVM's fitted for 15 years with out any problems, they will give you a slight improvment in fuel economy, and maybe 5 mph+

I have owned buth the old and new type selectros. The old type were a bugger to seal and had a habit of cracking the casing if you did a lot of 4x4ing. The newer type were better, but needed a 3/4 turn (and often a spanner) to lock.

IMHO - all series owners should throw their free wheeling hubs away. I did (gave mine away) and never regretted it.

I would point out that you don't need to engage the hubs - just engage four wheel drive for a bit each month (don't do it on the move!). Will have exactly the same effect, and you don't have to get out to do it.

Unlike most owners with free wheel hubs I leave mine (Warn) normally engaged, and only disengage them when I am looking at long spells on the highway.

I do have free wheeling hubs on the landy already, I was thinking using the selectro's because they are so easy to engage. They also look a lot more solid than the ones i have at the moment.

I have found the older AVM's(Metal) to be a little stronger, with a more positive locking action.
