View Full Version : Series III Stage one - removal of LPG

We have a Series III Stage 1 which we were contemplating selling. Instead we have decided to donate our free time and money to "doing her up". She is currently configured to run on dual fuel so the first step will be to uninstall the gas conversion. Has anyone ever undertaken this task? If so, pointers and pitfalls would much appreciated before we start this operation.

Why would you want to uninstall the gas system? For me LPG is a godsend!! Helped by the 12:1 compression ratio of course :D

As she will only be used on special occassions we want her to be as close to original as possible. In addition, the gas cylinder etc. is way out of date and apparently it will cost around $500-$600 to get it recertified and valves etc. replaced.

I don't think there will be any pitfalls. Just remove the mixer rings off the carburettors, along with the evaporator, hoses and gas tank. You will have the spare coolant hoses to deal with but that shouldn't be a problem. After you have done that you can probably fiddle with the ignition timing since they are often adjusted to be better on gas then on petrol. I personally haven't done it but I don't think you will encounter any problems as long as the car will run on petrol at the moment.

Were bouts are you located would help as i could lend a hand or remover it for u also may be able to assist with some s3stg1 bits as i have a few :D:D:D:D:D

To start with, I would make sure the tank is empty and/or shut the main valve off, you could decanter it later on but you need the right fittings and hoses and your not meant to do it as your meant to be a gas fitter to play with live LPG systems but this isnt a public foum is it lol.
To empty the tank, run it until the engine stalls at idle, there will then be next to nothing in it so will then a. be a bit safer to work with and b. be a lot lighter.
The carbi rings are called Mixers and the other part previously described as the evaporator is really a converter.
There are also solonoids on the fuel line and the converter to disconnect as well as the dual fuel switch and guage to remove aswell as the wiring to run them.
Other small issues could be things like the air cleaner tube clamps as they sometimes modify that sort of stuff to fit the mixer/s.
Just remember before you undo any lines, make sure you have the main valve off and you run it out or if you do get a leak then remember LPG is heavier than air and will go to the lowest point so be aware of any sorces of ignition like pilot lights on heaters and hot water services.
Also, you are not allowed to reuse LPG lines as they are olived fittings and are prone to leaking when refitted.
