Mate if you're in Sydney i've got mine off the car and in the shed if you want to duck over with a tape measure - i think there's one on Ebay - i got mine from there for $700 and i thought that was cheaper (time and materials) than making one. I think they're about $1200 from TJM...?
This one's alloy too.
Matt.

G'Day Jason
Where are you ??? .... update in your profile
If you're in Melb you can measure as much as you want on my rack.
I've got a TJM alloy (dunno if it's the style you mean)
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
BTW ...currently between $500 --> $700 on ebay for alloy .. is it worth welding a steel one??

Geez sschmez, the disco looks clean there.
I was going to say, PM sschmez lol.
If you do build a rack, make sure you square it up as you go as that is the main problem with homemade racks, people who dont weld on a regular basis that start in 1 corner and by the time they get to the other end it is all warped and most people build them too heavy which ends up lowering the amount you can put up there.
Im not saying you dont know this already but someone else thinking of building one might apreciate the thought.
My rack isnt the step down expedition type but it is full length steel custom made for the tent and cost $640 from TJM, but it is tradesman brand and is pretty light for a steel rack and I dont think it looks all that bad.

Thanks for all the input guys.
I am in Alice Springs so popping round to measure is a bit impracticle (may pop in for a beer on my way through at a later stage though!!!!)- I'll have to update my profile (thanx sschmez)
As luck wouuld have it I posted my enquiry yesterday morning and yesterday afternoon got chatting to a guy whose selling his Disco 2. He may be willing to swap my roof bars (and a couple of squid) for his full length ally roof rack (not split level but beggars can't be choosers).
Can anyone tell me if a Disco 2 has the same gutter to gutter measurement to a Disco 1? The length of the rack is not a problem (I have measured that)
Again all input appreciated
Jason

Wouldn't it be easier to put the shopping in the back than on the roof Steve....;);)
Sorry I forgot about the family...;)

This is on my list of things to do, i'm thinking of making it out of round tube and in the same style as sschez's rack.I 'd rather buy tyres than pay $700 odd on rack.

A flat rack can have it's advantages, for eg I've carried fibro sheets up there and had no concerns about bending it, long timber lengths stay level, and the etcetera.
I use it for all manner of things,, sometimes even camping:)

Nor would i put shopping on the roof ! I have a half rack but a full length rack has its advantages especially when camping.
