At last a decent landy club with local content, I am canberra based I have a series 1 basket case in the rainy day basket and my current love is an 82 series 3 four cylinder 109, she come to Australia in 92 from Singapore after spending 10 years in Africa, she is most likely ex army from some rogue state, she some weird features not seen locally, for starters the hard top is steel not alloy but its factory, it has a hatch over passenger seat, thinking its ex nato too, it has dual wheel cylinder brakes on front with 11 in drums and 11 inch drums on rear, the suspension is raised 3 inches, has a massive v8 size radiator and a huge oil cooler which for some reason there is a temp gauge fitted to the sump, it had a dual battery system but it wasnt military wiring its rough so I pulled it out, she has electronic igniton and a salisbury diff,
Some advice from those in the know here , I was having dreams of fitting a holden motor, am I doing the wrong thing? what would her road speed be with 7.50x16 tyres I havent driven her yet she had 12 years in a yard, her speedo shows only 60,000 ks which I beleive is genuine, her exhaust is best described as a joke about 1 and 1/4 diameter its pathetic, whats best to fix this?
some years ago I owned a series 2a exarmy 109 in Canberra, she had hard and soft tops she could be recognised by having one high cut guard and one standard, is she still doing the rounds? I resprayed her in army drab not long before selling and shehad huge bull lights on the front, would like to know if shes about still or if someone knows who owns her now. Good luck to all

Hi from across the ditch :)

Sounds like it may have been a V8 once. These are found on the Stage 1.

Other people are happy with their conversions, provided they are done right. I have heard good and bad stories. Personally I favour keeping the LR engine, or putting in a V8.

I have a Stage 1 V8. It cruises comfortably at 100ks on the open, straight road. Cornering ain't too good though. Goes faster than that and is quieter when doing 80ks, but annoys other drivers too much. The exhaust is probably ok for the 4 cylinder engine, the V8 has 2".
Does your odometer have 5 or 6 numbers on it? If it has 5 it has probably been around the clock a few times.
Cheers

Welcome to AULRO. Sounds like you've got a couple of decent projects there.
3 inch lift is interesting - chassis or spring?
The hard top does sound similar to the Qld ones. They are rounded at the front, and look "factory" (coz they were, just not Land Rover factory)
Is the history known? Or a "mate told a mate" kind of thing? Ex-mil "rogue" African state Landies could be expected to have some form of mine protection (extra plates in the back of the wheel arches for starters.)
Post some photos - plenty of ex-Africans on here plus more military men than you can poke a bayonet at ...

Welcome mate sounds like a interesting ride you have and on a personal note dont go the holden engine apart and from wrecking the history of such a car the only gain will be constant replacement of engines
A good healthy 2 & 1/4 four engine does go well
If you want a car that will sit on a 100 ks either fit a over drive or high speed t/c or buy a road car
The best series i owned had a leyland terrier v8 with a tojo g/box and t/c that thing would do over the old ton but being a series it was all over the road like a mad womans poo

Pretty much what I thought, but I was being diplomatic

Some drivers do stupid things around slow vehicles, like getting themselves and others killed because of their impatience  So I usually stick to around 85-90 ks, slowing for corners, unless the road has a straight stretch or I'm on the motorway, then it's 90-95ks. More than that and the fuel economy drops, ummm, fast.

Heh heh fun though. NOT. ;)

To the best of my knowledge the old girl was lifted by stretching the hangers, the front hangers are actually welded to the chassis, she has quiet heavy spring packs and there is an ingenious method how the spare top main spring is carried which involves the tow bar, its real stiff in the ride from the short distance I have driven the old thing, when it will stay in hi, the selector spring I fear has carked it.
The history is half and half known, I dont know how it got to Africa but it had 9,000k when it started is trip, all the service dates were and are still recorded above the windscreen in texta, its been all over africa, it left Africa and went to Singapore onits way to Darwin, it has a private vehicle import plate under the hood which is dated 1/92, it toddled around South oz and the kimbereleys and ended up in Canberra where it was last registered in 95, I bought it of a mate who had it in his wrecking yard and I took pity on it and now throw love at it with gay abandon hoping it will carry us around the country again when the kids are gone from the nest.
With the top to describe it better, if u look at the back end of most hardtopped landys the rear upper door area , well mine is straight with the gutter the top door doesnt infringe on the roof section like all series 2 s and 3s I have seen, it also has a nice Donaldson aircleaner on the gaurd and interstingly the element was last changed in alice springs in 93.
I shall endeavour to get some photos of the old trollop, shes not looking her best being half painted and all but u will all get the gist.:wasntme:

I have the remains of a 53 L/R 80 inch, got most of it kind off, when I say basket case I mean it will eventually need the intervention from the man up stairs to see it go again, I wont pics coz u will all larf , I am thinking the Holden engine is a loser of an idea, I thought it wouldnt have the steam in the rev department when needed most, in low range!, guess if I tweak the little 4 it will go for ever, u do take a new approach to driving when u own a landy, I remember my old series 2a was like wouldnt pull the skin of a custard on the road but in the scrub she left the other types for dead far as ability was concerned, u took your life into your own hands trying to corner quickly, we did a a disgraceful 180 degree spin on our first venture u cant hairpin corner a landy at 35 mph, so I had to re evaluate things and decided why be in a hurry let the other tempory citizens scream of into oblivion we will get there in the end, I am guessing the new beasty will require the same thinking and figure she could act just as disgracfully as the old 2a given the same circumstances,
I might ask, are 7.50 x16s still made?

out of experience of been in military in africa and working with Nato troops all the vechicles where fitted with butt plates [i can hear you all laughing] under all the seats on the floor pan is either triple/double plating to protect our vital parts from the dreaded land mine

If i had my way i would drag home every old series beast i could find, in the interests of continued matrimonial harmony I have 2 and 2 is all i am allowed to have, i know the series landys fairly well far as fixing them and generally keeping them going, i really need a nice holden carby so i can throw the current thing up the street, after i hit it with a stick, whos got a spare one?
I thank u all for your kindness u all seem to be a fairly well tuned up lot

I may be able to help in the old Holden parts area. I have a friend with more parts than you can poke a stick at.
As for The driving thing. Thats a series issue. The TD5 with mod chips is more how not to leave the ricers in your wake:twisted:. I find it funny when I stop at the light and there is nothing behind me and 10 cars in the lane next to me. I find I'm often through the intersection when the first car is still moving off.

Hi, she do got the 5 digit speedo with odo, I figured it could have clocked but using the original history which shows mileage at various times during routine services I deemed the mileage to be original, I could be wrong, I usually am just ask my wife

I found with my series 2a that people were less inclined to scoot through giveway signs if they saw the landy coming, I used to get the odd smart comment from youngsters coz she was ex army like "wheres the war", such narrow minded people are around still even today, I would dearly love a holden carby to play with if u could find one for me I would quiet happy.

How does one extract v12 performance from a 2.25 4 cyl, anyone know if the leyland built engines are better or worse then the earlier donks, when i got mine she was siezed, I filled her with a mixture of diesel and wd40, everyday i walk past i jumped on the crank handle and one day she broke free, we fired it up and shes as tight as a nut, doesnt blow smoke or have any blowby so I think shes ok, she needs a major service.

G'day Landyfromanutherland :)
Welcome to AULRO:)
Your Landy sounds like a 4 cylinder Series 2a "1ton" model (raised chassis with extended shackles front & rear, and fitted with 11 leaf front springs and 8 rear, it also sounds like it has an "Athol Hedges" brand steel roof, which has rounded front and rear corners, on the Left Rear spring hanger just above the spring shackle you will find the Chassis No that will indicate what model it is, has it got the Aust Army Cut front guards,or standard fronts, the best way to get better performance out of a 2.25 litre 4 cyl, is to fit a set of extractors and a 2 inch exhaust system with a free flow muffler;) that's what is fitted to mine (1968 2a LWB Ex-Army) and I can sit on 90+ on the highway with 7.50 x 16's. the original Zenith Carby tuned correctly is good, with a Holden Carby you need an early model as one off a 186/202 will only drown the motor with petrol, early grey motor FE-to-EJ Holdens are best, the Landrover replacement carb for the original Solex or Zenith is a Webber 34-ICH model:)
cheers

Sure do. Bridgestone do the Jeep Service brand and Firestone have Triple Traction. Both are 8 ply, but I think you can also get 16 ply too.
Cheaper than your average Simex:twisted:

G'day All, Interesting a Land Rover from Africa fitted with a steel roof and a 'Helio hatch' to boot, need some pix to show my friend Graham, I think he had one similar when in Rhodesia or somewhere yaers ago, anyway welcome to AULRO, cheers Dennis:wasntme::angel:

The original configuration of the helio hatch is unknown, currently its a sun roof type thing with a piece of perspex in the hole, I guess it would have been a hinged lid or something, i had a bueatiful old 1941 ford 1 ton ute which I restored from a rusted pile of nothing into a very rare machine, she had the hatch in the roof, I had to part with it, the things u do for women!
