Can I move my entire Outlook contacts/saved email folders with emails/tasks/ etc etc from my desk top to my lap top? My lap top is now going to be my primary contact point and I need all info from my desk top Outlook to now appear on my lap top.
Hope there are some gurus out there who can help.
P.S. I spoke with one IT guy I know over the phone who asked me to do a search for a *.pst file......but nothing was found on either my lap top or desk top.
Also computers are networked if that helps.

THe pst file is the one you want. Which version of outlook??
if you open outlook, go File, open and .pst file and it should show where it is located. usually it's called outlook.pst

The .PST file may be considered a system or hidden file.
When you search, try checking the option to search for hidden/system files under advanced options.

In outlook, click on file, then import and export, export the details as a pst file in a directory on the laptop or a CD (but you did say they are networked)
Then in the laptop, again click on file, import and export, then import the file you have just saved into outlook on the laptop

Thanks Phoenix
It's Outlook 2003 I have on both machines and I just did a search on my desk top for outlook.pst and no results to display comes up:eek: Is there something I am missing or not doing?

I found mine here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
Where Administrator is my login name. You need to look in the folder which corresponds to your user name.

Is this your work PC?
Your mail may be stored on a server and not on your PC at all.

Yes, this is my work PC but we are a small office and we do not have our own server........but then I am not too cluey on IT stuff.
Can't seem to find the pst file still, even when I search in hidden folders etc:(
Can it really be this hard to get my mail onto another machine?

Found 5 pst files at last on my c drive, 4 Outlook.pst files of various sizes ranging from 265kb to 271,825kb and 1 archive.pst file at 2,001kb...........now what? I have created a shortcut to the largest pst file on my desk top so can I now somehow take it from there onto my lap top?

The largest is your best bet, but check the date modified. If you've used your email today, it will have today's date on the correct file. The other 4 will have old dates on them.

In Outlook 2003 do:
Tools/Options/Mail Setup/Data File
And this will tell you where your mail is stored.
If it's blank, it's most likely you're using a server for storage, so go to:
Tools/Options/Mail Setup/Email Accounts/ select "view or change..." click next and tell me what you have. POP3 is the most common for small setups, and mail will always need a local storage file. IMAP and Exchange are both server side.
Regardless, grabbing the PST, or exporting the server store to a PST only grabs mail, calendar and stuff, not your preferences. To migrate Outlook with all settings from one machine to another use something like "Expert Settings Backup" (http://www.backsettings.com/expert-settings-backup.html) which will grab mail and settings and put them in a slef-extracting executable you can just run on the target machine.

Aye, Mick Ok then, friendship remains intact and Stevo is placated and won't feel the need to run you off the road next time you are in the Audi ( might be a bit harder against the Mack truck :D)
