my 96 disco appears to have a metal casing over the wheel nuts(which is wearing) making it difficult to fit a wheel brace to various wheel nuts. is the casing easily removable?

thanks rob.

i take it your talking about the alloy wheel nuts

my wheel brace doesn't fit my'n that well either

i just assumed it was a comprimise so landrover didn't have to maketo wheel braces one for steel one for alloy........i thought maybe they just made it in between so its fits with a bit of room on the steel nut and is tight on the alloy nut

I use a 27mm hex 1/2" drive impact socket and a small 1/2" breaker bar (I think thats what its called). Much better than the LR wheel brace and it fits over the alloy wheel nuts perfectly.

Its just a cosmetic thing. You can buy dress nuts for trucks as well that slip over the top. Damn annoying really, my W/B came off the other day and clonked me in the forehead, as I was trting to undo them. my fault really.

Here is one that hasn't been addressed yet,
pretty aren't they, look nice with the alloys, for someof us, i think that is acceptable 'bling'.
But what a right pain they are,
i bent my wheel brace ( for want of a better word)
trying to undo them, maybe L/R owners with alloys weren;'t meant to change tyres and get dirty.

i use a 27mm socket and a 2 ft bar works a treat. you don't even have to stand on it
Having said that, the caps on the front o/s of mine rattle like marbles in a can, a really smart tye changing idiot on my last set of tyres, did them up with a truck rattle gun, ( thats why i bent the bar) when i went back, to have them loosen them, the idiot had been sacked, and the chrome caps are now loose over the nuts.
Have tried beating them into submission but they still rattle.
One day I'll get some more.

You can buy wheel nuts for alloys that don't have the shiny cover. Might not look quite so nice, but a lot easier to use.

The Classic Range Rovers with alloys had the "coverless" nuts if that helps.

Discount places like K Mart, Auto One and Super Cheap sell a wheel removal kit for about $12 that has an telescopic 1/2" bar and a double ended socket that fits small Nippon cars. Put the socket in the charity shop bin and use the bar with the 27mm socket that the other guys in this thread have recommended and you have an ace wheel removal kit. You can dance on the end of those bars if need be. Top value.

see no spirit of miss adventure....

The first thing you need to to is fit an aircompressor and a tank to the car.

Then you get an airbag jack and use this to lift the car up

Since you have compressed air play the same game as the tyre shop boys.

go and buy a 1/2 inch rattle gun+27mm socket

use the rattlegun.

See how easy that is....

dancing on bars, coverless nuts, sheesh you guys make tyre changing sound like a night on the cross...

All these things are unnecessary if you get a tension wrench and do the nuts up to the correct torque. If your servicing centre are over tightening the nuts with a rattle gun, then complain and if necessary go somewhere else. If they are butchering your wheel nuts, their other work is probably not too flash!

Always a good idea to check the wheel nut tensions after you pick up the car from service. If they are too loose you can tighten them (also see para 1!), and if too tight it it always easier to loosen and re-set them at home, than in the rain when you have a flat tyre! ;)

Cheers,

Lionel
