I need to replace at least one suspension bush in my D2, and have been considering replacing the lot with Poly-bushes or similar, but have been advised against it. Has anyone else gone down this track, and would you recommend it or not?

I have been told they give a harsher ride.
I will sit and watch for the results as i'd like to know too, maybe some on here have tried them.

Which bushes specifically?
The only ones that I wouldn't replace with poly are the ones in the radius arms as they will limit articulation, especially the ones at the axle end. The rest should be fine.

No right or wrong here - just personal taste/opinion.
I had poly everything:eek: on my last Defender - and it was harsh.
This time around I've kept to rubber - and a good result. I know I'm referring to a Defender but I can't see how the end-result would be much different. Anyway, like I said - personal opinion.:)

Got poly bushes all round on a Defender they're fine no problems as Barra1 says personal choice price is about the same

Thanks to all of you for the feedback. Depending on what follows I may just stick with rubber, since at my age, more comfort is attractive.
Cheers,

I notice there are different grades of poly bushes too, check out some of the common landy mags and you'll see them advertised. Blue I think was softer.
A well known aftermarket parts supplier in Perth advised me against them more than once, and he was selling them himself...

generally speaking if you want good all round performance stick to OE rubber bushes, most poly ones use a harder durometer material except Super Pro, who are smart and select the appropriate durometer and design for each application.
BTW, colour between brands means nothing just depends which dye they threw in the pot at the time.

Rubber bushes and oil leaks don't mix, i'm told... A lot of people go poly for this reason. But for me, its the rubber ones for the true RRC ride :)

I have got rubber all round but have changed a couple of polys they are SOOOOOOOooooooo easy to do.
Next time my front radius arm rubbers need doing that's whats going in.
I wonder if they wear quicker or slower to rubber?

all things being equal, poly is very good in compression, (think chassis end of rear lower trailing arms on D1, RRC, 'fender) not as good in rotation.
If the durometer is too hard, they are bad.
Over twenty years ago I had Nolathane machine me up some shackle bushes for my CJ6 Jeep. They lasted less than six months. Went back to OE rubber and they were still on it in good condition when it went to its new owner years later.

For shock bushes my Bilstein rubbers lasted a few weeks (admitted hard use) and my Rancho urethanes have been in for years - outlasting even the metal heim joints.

Years ago i tried a set of poly bushes in my rangie even though most said not to, and now i know why, i found them not only harsh but they actually wore out quicker than the oe rubber ones. And when i went to put rubber back in i had to melt the suckers with an oxy to get them out and cut one of the radius arm bolts as it had siezed.
Only good place for them is in the panhard rod especially if your ps leaks. Dirt and gravel find their way in between the bushes and grind out the bush and the grease they supply doesnt last long once submerged.
