Gday Dazza,
I have one of those gme seperate head jobbies. The main unit sits tucked in beside the steering wheel column near the fuses and the head unit sits above the transfer lever screwed to the very front of the transmission tunnel.
Others have mounted the head unit where the switchs for the sunroof would go.

I have mine in our D2 on the drivers side of the transmission tunnel. Gets it out of the way and I have something to rest my knee on.
Downside is that it is hard for the driver to see the channels but as I don't change channels much it's no problem to me.
I don't like installing them overhead as I have been in one accident where I cut my head open on something that I don't have any idea off. I did not have a radio fitted overhead but if I did I probably would not have survived the impact.
Second choice and best would be a remote head unit as long as you can find somewhere to fit the main unit.

In my Discovery S1 I have full unit mounted in the center roof console using power from the controls to the 'would be' sun roof, it's mic is routed down A pillar to center console so it doesn't ever dangle and is easy to grab/replace while concentrating on the road/track.

I've got a TX3400 with the main unit velcroed (H/D velcro :)) to the inside of the fuse access panel that opens under the steering wheel. The head unit is screwed into the plastic under the three switch carrier where the factory cruise and fog switches are. Mic holder is screwed into the carpet on the side of the transmission tunnel.

I've got a Tx3400. The main unit is on top of the panel over the driver's footwell. The head unit is velcroed to the top of the steering column.

There was a thread on this just a week or so ago.
I posted pics in there of mine in the over head consul in the Disco1.
Found it http://www.aulro.com/afvb/showthread.php't=33071&highlight=UHF+mounting

I've put a small amateur radio upside down under the driver's seat with its control panel in the top dashboard cubby. Both held with stickyback velcro. Radio is upside down so the speaker's on top and perfectly audible. Mike sits in the drink holder. No seat tangles, no holes drilled, almost invisible. Antenna on the trailing outer edge of the bonnet where a diamond mount is quieter than a Belkin mount, no wind whistle, again no holes and no bull bar.
I'll unvelcro the radio if sinking is a risk!

I have a GME TX3400. Same as NJZ, the main unit is velcroed to the inside of the fuse access panel. Good spot, doesn't move and audible.
Head unit is velcroed to the top of the dash above the centre right air vent (on the black strip). Mic just sits between head unit & dash binnacle. Works really well and no marks or residue whatsoever to the dash. Easy to read, within easy reach.

I fitted mine on top of the dash with some toggle bolts going down through the vent (D2). This makes it easy to read, the missus dosn't bash her leg on it (used to have it on the transmission hump on her side), no restriction on the seat travel and it also means I have no visible wiring. A big plus with this is that there are no visible holes in the console or dash :)
Works for me anyway.

I have mine in the same place but i siliconed the bracket to the cover and siliconed the mic holder to the console just infront of the auto T bar. I was worried about hearing it at first but it actually sounds like the sound is coming out of the dash binnacle, mine is a TX3400 as well.

I have a remote head Uniden, head unit where the sun roof switch would be (screwed) and the brain box behind the fusebox/wiring cover below the s/wheel and the mic fixed to a plastic piece slid under the r/h mounts for the sun visior.
Cheers.

I am going to mount my TX4400?? (The Big GME one) to the back of the centre console as it is too big for the dash or side of the trans tunnel.
This wont be an issue for passengers as mines a two seater now anyway :)
I also want to place extra gauges and switches about the CD player.
Cheers.

I have a TX 6200 handheld mounted in an in car mount in the centre of the overhead console.
Theres no Mic cord hanging down, I find the inbuilt mic sensative enough.
I can take it out of the cradle and have a 5 Watt handheld if needed.

Mine is mounted on the AC panel infront of the Passenger's RH knee.....
This is annoying for them as the cab is so small anyhow.... BUT..............
I dont give a Toss as i can still drive just fine and i'm selfish and who cares about Passenger comfort.....
