I had the local non LR driving expert tell me that theTd5 engine was prone to spin bearings because they don't have the lock tap to stop this from happening. Can one of the mechanics on the board tell me if this is true or not. Pat

That seems extremely unusual.

Would this "driving expert" be similar to the gooses that channel 7 have on their Seven Sunrise program. Everyone there is introduced as an expert.
Seriously now, I have never heard of any problems like that with TD5 bearings.

I work in the mines and the place is full of experts, all of them on LR faults.Just as a side bit one of them has a Prado with a cracked head and Toyota's reply was warranty doe's not cover it.He is the only one with nothing to say. Pat

Never heard of a TD5 spinning any bearings.
Edit, except the tensioner on the fan belt if it gets plunged into mud while hot.

Not heard of that one. They could be thinking of the oil pump bolt that missed out on locktite at one stage. If that bolt comes off then you have no oil flow so it kills the motor.

All I can say is :eek::eek::eek:
I have been working on these for a loonngg time, and many different Td5 models, high and low k's, poorly and well maintained, thrashed and chipped, driven carefully, and I can honestly say I have never seen or even heard of it happening, except of course when someone actually runs it out of oil......or the oil pump bolt comes out....
I even hesitate to call myself an 'expert', as there is always more to learn.....:D

That seems extremely unusual.
What I meant was the it seems extremely unusual for half shell slipper bearings to not have the retaining, umm, er, "tabs" (Dunno what they are called. )

Expert (x-spurt) a drip under pressure.
mmmm, let's see ...... x = unknown quantity,
spurt (by good old Microsoft's dictionary) = a short intense burst of energy, interest, action, or speed
expert = unknown outcome over a short intense time frame.
Flash in the pan maybe .

I'm sure this is a very rare problem, but I did see one thread about 2 years ago on the UK Landrovernet forum.
The person concerned had put a 2nd hand td5 in his series 3, and it had eventually developed a nasty knock. When it was dismantled one of the big end bearings was wrecked because the bearing shell had moved, and impeded the oil way in the crankshaft. The upper part of the piston had been damaged because the failure of the bearing had allowed the piston to hit the head!
The thread mainly described his replacing the td5 with another one.
Cheers,
Lionel
