Cuttin guards info

So, I have phsyched myself into cutting the guards when I get the Rangie back from JustinC (c'mon lad, whats keeping ya!!:D)

So, ive read about it all, the fronts seem like a piece of cake. But the back doors are a worry. Do the doors require any rewelding if they are cut as theres two skins (inner and outter)... so what happens with the gap? Also, cutting the wheel arch where the door meets it, how does that look after the cut? Does the door seal again, or do you get a breeze through it?

Essentially I want to cut the guards enough to allow for future larger tyres, so as not to repeat the process again (although I dont think ill go bigger than 33"). Ive seen most cuts done above the guard lips, so I figure I can use the lip as a guage. Is this correct? Also, I dont want to spend big $$ on the fancy plastic stuff, just the rubber strip will do. How flexible is this strip, if for example, I want more squared looking guards instead of the traditional rounded shape.

I dont have a suspension lift, although that is coming (again JustinC is the bottle neck for my mods!! :p). Dont plan on a body lift, so cutting guards will need to allow for articulation.

Something i saw someone on here do was to fill the gap between outer and inner skin with that expanding foam spray. Thats what im going to try anyway.

I dont have a suspension lift, although that is coming (again JustinC is the bottle neck for my mods!! :p). Dont plan on a body lift, so cutting guards will need to allow for articulation.

Sorry Stoogey one, but this week it has been like the emergency department at the Royal, Go GO GO. The cutting and pillar repairs begin on Monday....

I can just imagine the fun you are going to have with the 4" grinder:eek: on those guards!!
I'll try to give you a ring during the week, lately it has been the busiest I have seen since moving shops.

The LRA flares for the rear have a U shaped lip that caps both the inner shell and outer skin and provides support so the skin doesnt flap around.

Ive done the passenger side but i am not 100% happy with the result. It needs some more fiddling. I found the only way to atach the front section of the flare was with screws which I was trying to avoid. Once I get it right I will post up some piccys. I am sure the tyre mob will get a laugh on Monday when they replace the rears.

Ive read that thread (and others on here) and its a pitty that thread doesnt have more pics on the rear door cuts and finishing off. I think I too wouldnt be thinking of taking pics when im slicing the Rangie :eek: I was thinking of maybe getting a welder to re weld to inner and outter skins, just a thought.

JustinC - just messing with ya mate, I totally understand that your a busy bee, so no sweat there. As for calling every 10 minutes, might just do that to ***** you hehe.
But in return for my patience and understanding (im such a nice guy) I will hit you up for a few 4x4 weekends if your keen - show me how to 4x4 properly anyways ;)

Mate its a big gap - this is why the LRA flares have a U section for the doors as part of the rear door flare.

If its any help, this is how I did my cut. Keeping in mind my one is a Disco2 and not a Rangie, there may be some differences.

that was me and it worked a treat in keeping everything out. i also used it on the fronts to seal up the gap between the inner guard liner and the flare - just to stop all the **** getting behind where it would be otherwise impossible to clean.
once finished i also siliconed all the edges of the flares to stop any dirt water getting in that way.

Has anyone got photos of how they cut the inner wheel well of rear doors after they cut the rear doors? Not sure how one goes about this.
