I have been trying without success to use a 512 mb MMC card in my TomTom One XL.
The card that came with the unit is an SD card with a capacity of 128mb.
I would like to increase the capacity in order to put a whole lot more POI's and the Camps Australia positions.
It would seem that although the SD card and the MMC card are similar, the MMC card is not suitable for my unit.
Is this correct???

Authenticating software on the TT1 is a pain.. after an upgrade anyway.
I'm guessing your TT1 has detected the 512 card has a copy of the software/maps, & won't play.
Have you done the paperclip reset on it?

I did all the things as advised but the TT1 wont recognise the card.
The unit just displays a big red X
I haven't tried the paper clip yet....I hadn't thought to try that.

Make sure your new card is formatted in the FAT32 file system.
To check,
1) Insert card in your PC's card reader or connect TomTom via cable.
2) Right click on the Start button (assuming XP) and select "Explore".
3) Find the drive letter of your SD card / TomTom unit (e.g. "F") and right click on it and select "Properties".
4) This will open a window with the pie chart showing free space of the drive, etc. In the same window it will let you know what file system the SD card is formatted in.
5) If it's FAT and not FAT32, then that will be your problem.
6) To re-format, right click on the drive letter again in the Explorer window (like step 3) and select format, make sure you select FAT32 from the drop down list under "File System".
I don't want to state the obvious, but.... Make sure you have backups of your TomTom files before formatting the card.
Hope this helps,
Jon

Thanks D3Jon
I actually formatted the card with the Fat32 system before copying the files onto it.
The problem I seem to be facing is that the unit will not recognise the card at all.
This is why I have reached the assumption that the unit will only recognise SD cards and not MMC, even though there is a similarity between them.
This is the only thing I can come up with.
I can not do anything with the card whilst it is in the unit. I can only work with it when it is in my card reader attached to the computer.
At the moment I don't have another SD card to try but will have one in the near future.
I will post a result when I have tried it.
Thanks for the responses.

Did you copy files over, or restore from a backup onto the 512?

I have tried both ways and no joy either way.
The GPS unit just will not recognise the card. A big red X appears whenever I insert it.
I can only 'restore' the info by first copying the files to the card and it then "fools" TomTom Home into thinking it is a GPS receiver.
When I click on the restore button - I wait and wait and wait and nothing happens.
I really think it is the MMC card that the system doesn't like.

Ah, I didn't notice the MMC card reference in your original post... that might be the problem, to be honest I have no idea what the difference is between SD and MMC?
I only know about the FAT32 stuff after buying some UK maps and then downloading them to a card I already had, took me ages to work out that the TomTom didn't like FAT file system.

I have the tom tom 710, and upgraded the SD card to 1 gig. I copied all the files to my lap top and the copied those to the new SD card. The only problem I had was when I reinserted the new card in to the Tomtom, it froze. I had to wait until it powered down before I could re boot it, after that it worked fine.

Here is an update.....
I purchased a new SD card and had no problems getting it to work.
Perhaps the problems I had with the MMC card was due to it having been used in another device (Digital Camera).
So...perhaps it is best to use new rather than used cards when attempting to do this.
Everything is working now and that is great..
Thanks everyone for your responses..........::D
