series 2a + 3 brake pipes

Hi , just wondering is there any difference between 2a and 3 brake lines ? And what size is the brake line used 3/16 , 1/4 ... I'm not sure , Thanks

I don't have any of my books here in Melbourne, but I can say that there will have been more changes during S3 production in particular than between S2a and S3, and probably also more changes during S2a production as well.

The major changes will have been with the introduction of dual circuit brakes on later S3 production, and the adoption of the Salisbury rear axle on 109s. There will also be differences between four and six engines as this affects the position of the engine crossmember and hence the piping clipped to it. Similarly, there will be differences with the Stage 1, and of course there are differences between the 88 and 109.

I suspect, but I am not sure that late S3 went metric with the fittings. I'm pretty certain that the pipe is all 3/16" (except for the pipe to the reservoir), although it may have gone metric in late S3 production.

The short answer is it depends on whether you're buying them or making them.

They are all 3/16" steel pipe with imperial fittings, up to (I think) about 1980, when some parts went metric. Yes, it gets interesting around then. You could have metric pipe fittings on a master cylinder with imperial fittings on the wheel cylinders, for instance.

If you're buying made-up pipes, then order exactly what you need for your particular verhicle.
