We recently had our ADSL upgraded to ADSL2 and at about the same time my netgear wireless modem/router has been continuasly dropping out. So my question to the computer geeks i mean guys is, could the dropouts be caused by the fact that my wifi modem isnt an adsl2 modem (although the firmware is upgraded to it) ?

On another note, i downloaded the firmware upgrade but it came as an image file even though its only 5mb ? I have tried mounting it using power iso but all i get is the original image still.

I notice a lot more dropouts with ADSL2+ than I ever had with ADSL.

If you think your wireless is dropping out, try connecting to your routers home page. If you can get there no worries it's the connection to the router (ie modem/broadband) that's have some unscheduled downtime.

Even though its a wifi modem , it uses a lan to connect to the desktop pc and only use wifi with my laptop.

Your ISP will also have a service type adjustment...

I went through this recently. My ISP is Netspace and I've got a Belkin 4 port wireless ADSL+2 router.

After 2 months of helpdesk support and two replacement routers it turned out that the router had to be set up as PPPoA instead of PPPoE which both the ISP and Belkin insisted on.

Since the change its worked 100% perfectly.

Iprimus are doing a line test today after i spoke to a tech last night, i did notice though that after i unplugged the line to the phone handset i didnt get any dropouts for an hour ? I changed the line filter and the short length of cable to the socket prior to this that made no difference. also found out that the upgrade hasnt gone thru yet but it seams a little odd that it was fine up untill before the CS rep called and advised us of the upgrade ?

OK, some modems will happily handle ADSL2 (It can use the same modulation type as "normal" ADSL) and some can't. You need to check both your modem with the manufacturer's website and know the firmware rev you're on. Some even have firmware options for both country specific implementations and to fix drop out issues on ADSL2.

Also, ADSL2 is far more fussy about imperfect lines, IME. Your modem/router probably has a status or diagnostics page showing connect speed, S/N ratio and d/s attenuation. (Might also show you how many drops since last reboot if you're lucky), so check these figures with the ISP to ensure they're in limits, but also try disconnecting everything off the phone sockets to see if they improve....things like faxes, poor quality filters, and old cabling with noise/crosstalk will have far more effect on ADSL2's higher frequencies than they would have had on your older service.

Finally, if the latter is looking like the problem, most ISP's can set their equipmenmt to be less aggressive in how they use the line - often resulting in slightly slower negotiated speeds, but more stability of the connection. At home, if I push the line, I can get 6Mb+, but it isn't stable. If I back things off, it's runs well at 4.5-5Mb d/s.

Some routers haver executables you run on your PC and they do the upgrade almost automatically, others you go into the web interface and point them to this image file on your local computer, whereas some still need you to use ftp or tftp to get the file onto them. A quick look in your modem/router's maintenance menu should give you a few pointers.

I'm with iinet, they have a connection choice manager, Rocket speed setting can cause a few stability probs , slow it down a little and it's more stable. etc etc.
I found I was getting 18,000 on the upto 24,000, but slowing it down a notch gives me 17,000 speed (good enough for me) beats the old 36 kbs dial up and the adsl 1500 speed:p:p:p:p:p

I'm using a Netgear DG834G V2 and i have never had a problem with it in about 8 months of use, Iprimus did a line check today and they found that my line was only average in the noise test although its been fine up untill 2 weeks ago.
