Very ugly, big and slow, but they will pull until they self destruct:o

It's a CLASSIC, not PLASTIC ...
You need to use fencing wire!

You should state fairly heavy gauge steel angle iron
The way the other answers are going i could see plastic angle being sugested:D

It seems the majority of experts here recommend using a fastener of some sort... kind of puts my idea of 'No More Nails' in perspective doesn't it?

sssssshhhhh I'm trying to disguise it as a winch, between you and me I'm trying to build a Spitfire out of a Land rover, everyone else has done the opposite.

What about Hay Band. You must have plenty lying around. ;)

Don't underestimate the tensile strength of bailing twine. I presume it would require a full cradle to be made so it will fit securely. I am just wondering about the effect it will have on the cooling system being so close to the radiator. Would it require the installation of a new crossmember?

buy the cheapest arb non winch bar and start cutting.
the grinder is your friend:twisted:
probably need a piece folded for the front.
good luck and don't ever drop that thing on your toes:o

I was thinking glue it to the brick wall and then hit the wall at 100-110kmh. It should self weld to the front:).
If you go over 110 then it becomes a mid mount unit:eek:.

I did and it looks great.....

Can you imagine the size of the cables needed to run the voltage to the thing over that distance, presuming the battery stays in the front.
Mid mounted with pulleys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!mmmmmmmmmmmmm Nah too much work

actually I can, I still have plenty of it and even thicker stuff on a drum at work....
just mount a pair of starter batteries next to it and run some 4ag down to them from the alternator...
Kermit wont have that problem His is a pto drive unit thats just waiting on kermit getting made roadworthy first.

Picked up the winch last night, it is bloody massive. It has the option of running it as either an electric or a PTO . Do you have to have one or the other or is there a way of having it as both and using one option as a backup?
Blknight.aus
11th August 2007, 12:06 PM
no you can do both, mount a belt drive pully on the pto unit and drive that with the electric motor.
put the pto in nuetral for electric work and leave the motor turned off for mechanical Im playing with the same Idea for kermit.

That would have to sit very low to avoid clearance issues with the radiator.

erm why the pto usually hangs off the transfer case, or were you going to drive that one off of the crank?

With the gearbox the car has (C4 auto) running off the crank would be a viable option

auto or no, it still has a TCASE and the pto hangs from the Tcase.....

I realise that and know it's possible. It's just due to the sheer size of the gearbox it would be an absolute pr1ck to setup up I'll have to look and measure to confirm but think (from memory) a pto drive shaft would hang well below the chassis rails on this vehicle
Dave if you want to experiment and set it up your more than welcome.

I think the best way is to have it running as electric only at this present time. After a few trips and when the gearbox is blown to bits and a decent box is fitted then a PTO option may be investigated.
So whose taking bets on how long the box will last?
Slunnie

That depends on if the gearbox or the chassis takes the hits. :lol2:

That -thing- looks disturbingly like ours dobbo...I'm starting to be very afraid.
I laugh at the humorous thought that people expect their alternator to run a winch...Need more batteries...I just need to find out where to put em.
And there is no harm to having the winch at the back...put the batteries up there with it. And you dont need amped up cables to the alternator for the above reasoning.
This isn't really helping is it dobbo...
Sorry. I'll send Matt 'round. He's good at that kinda stuff.
