Fitting Smiths Heater

G'day All,

I've scored a smiths heater - the flat one - for my Ute With No Name (SIIA). I'm wondering if anyone with one fitted up by the dealer/factory can tell/show me the correct hole to cut through the firewall?

On one of the parts diagrams I have it shows a large rectangular grommet where both pipes pass through - is this correct? If so, where can I get that grommet?

Also interested in the correct position for the heater switch.

On most of the 2a's there are 2 round rubber bungs on the left side of the flat section of the firewall directly behind (in line with)the left side of the engine block, that is the heater pipe holes, and there should be a couple of other holes/bungs for the mountings to go through, the Aust vehicles only ever had the round Smiths heater fitted, I don't think that we (Leyland) ever brought the flat "Fog Stirrer" into the country as an optional fit, I have never seen one fitted to an Australian CKD vehicle but the stamping should be there for fitting it, heater pipe fittment are at the left rear of the head and the right front of the thermostat housing, with a 3" steel pipe up from the rear hole with a wheel valve to turn water on and off.

Aust vehicles only ever had the round Smiths heater fitted, I don't think that we (Leyland) ever brought the flat "Fog Stirrer" into the country as an optional fit, I have never seen one fitted to an Australian CKD vehicle .

I had a H suffix 2A wagon, one of the last 2As and it had the flat Smiths heater, didn't heat much. I never took it off so I can't helpmuch akelly. We had the Smiths ball type in my wife's EK Holden and it produced more heat.

Depends on your Suffix whether it will fit or not.
If the hand throttle is centre dash then it probably won't, as the gubbins casing is in the way. If you have the push to start starter button under the dash, you will find this will be in the way as well.

From memory, Suffix D on is ok but as you know, with LR mix & match it may not. :confused: :confused:

Take some careful measurements as it may not fit without some serious mods.

I note yours is a '69 so it may be ok.

I'll be up for the pics as well I have a choice of 5 different heating elements I can add to Kermit when i get round to it and want to see whats out there.

your inluck got some on my pc can take some better ones tomorrow but these are better then nothing for now bit fuzzy just loading them onto the net and i'll put what i have now is anyone able to tell me what there worth

Did some measuring up today, made up a cardboard template of the heater, including the pipes - looks OK to fit no worries. I dont have a hand throttle or starter button. My only concern now is the gear-stick, it may foul. I'll check that in the morning.

Thanks for the info everyone, and the pics Mat - they were very helpful to get a feel for where it mounts. If you manage to get some better ones, chuck them up as I'm keen to see how high up the bulkhead it goes.

well, its official, the flat smiths heater don't fit in the Ute With No Name.

It fouls the gearstick, can't even get it in with the stick in 4th. I'm guessing that the 6cyls would be OK as the box mounts further back (I thnk).

Bugger it. On to plan B (wear 2 jumpers)...

I have had a good look at the pics put up by Dormobile Mat, and the heater seems to fit, and that is a late "D" suffix onward 2a 67-on 4 cylinder by the shape of the gear lever and dash, so it might mean that the little "O"ring at the bottom of your gear shift lever is worn or missing, therefore giving you excess freeplay in the lever so that it would foul the heater unit.
