Hi fellow D3's,
I'm interested in your thoughts on the capabilities of the standard fit tyres and how capable they are for track/mud work. I've had no drama in sand so far. ie I see some of the more interesting GCLRO trips require AT tyres.
Being an SE I've got the standard 18".
Cheers.

The main issue I often see is torn sidewalls.
Our work runs introductory 4x4 drive days for customers & there's been a few suffer this. The 17" tyres don't seem as bad.

Hey Mark,
Bit more information from my PM to you, I used the HPs on all sorts of terrain, and overall they didnt do to bad aside from the weak sidewalls where I shafted 2. Also I had 19's and no options at all until finally Good year bought back the MTR's. I looked at those at $555 a tyre , the HPs for mine were around $450 a tyre , so got some GMAX 18 inc tyres with All Terrain Grabbers. Great ride on road, much better and stronger off road and a lot more confidence in tackling some of the harder terrain.......and at around $300 a tyre. If you are looking at doing more off road, best bet is when it is time to change tyres, get rid of the HPs and get something more suitable. ALso seems there is becoming more and more options for 18inch rims,

Have fitted Cooper ST to the D3 and have one new Goodyear Wrangler 235 17R 17 going cheap for anyone in the Gold Coast area. PM me if interested.

Have been through 2 sets of the Goodyear Wrangler HP's in 70 000ks. Was surprised that they went as well as they did. Did the Kimberleys and Broome without a single problem. Have done side walls on tracks around here though. Now have a set of General Grabber AT2's in the 255/60R18 size. Currently very happy with these both on and off road.

Am running 265 70 17's BFG AT's, at the moment 65k's and perhaps another 20 in them, so far not a problem

I had these on my D2a back in the UK - excellent tyre for road and track work, so glad to hear they are equally good on the D3, as I was wondering what to put on when the factory tyres wear out!

I got General Grabber AT2'S fitted two weeks ago they handle realy good on road
and in the wet, Have not tryed them off road yet but they will get a good workout
from next Friday as we head to Broome.
I bought 5 tyres at $295 each fitted & balanced From Dog Tyred at Kallangur Best
price I could find in Bris and only 3 day wait for them.
I had a prob. with the cruise control last week could not reset it after disingaging
without turning off the ignition and restarting. Fixed at service on Mon said the switch was not working

Are the AT2's any noisier on the road than the standard Goodyears? I would expect that they are, but I know that LR did a great job on chassis noise transmission isolation.
Would be interested to know as my Goodyears will need replacing fairly soon (35,000 Km's)

There is an inherent problem with the CC switch, I'm on my second and looks like I will need a third

I'd be interested to know how your fuel economy has changed since fitting the AT2's.

Slightly more noisy, don't notice with the windows up. Certainly not of any concern. Haven't checked the fuel economy yet as have done too much varied driving and towing on short trips recently.

I have found no difference at all with fuel economy, I would almost say it is actually better, around 13.5l/100km atm.........and thats for a V8 ,

The fuel economy has not changed for city driving
still around 10lts per 100k. Thats a lot of stop start
as I average around 200k a day city driving.
have not been out of the city yet can't wait to get
out on the open road away from the idiots.

That's really encouraging then, I think a set of AT2's might well be on the cards! :)
Did you notice your Goodyear HP's getting noisier as they wore (mine have). Mine have also started to tramline like a b*****d when the road is worn from the trucks. I spoke to another D3 owner he said his Goodyears made the car do the same thing - he changed the tyres and it went away.

Yes they were getting very noisy and yes it did tramline on rutted roads which their are plenty of in Brissy. That has stoped with the AT2's

Have fitted Cooper ST to the D3.
Hi Will, how do you find the Coopers.
I’ve got Cooper 18” H/T Plus’s on the RR and I’m about to put low profiles on it so I was either going to keep the Coopers as spares or was thinking of just putting them on the D3 to get rid of the wranglers.
What's your experience with the Coopers so far.
Cheers.

Hi Drivesafe,
I am really impressed with the Cooper ST on the D3. Used two sets on the D1 before I sold it and never had any problems, so was keen to have them on the D3. So far have only done about 2600km since fitting and all on highway. They are slightly noisier then the original Wranglers but nothing that will worry us. Noise seems to be at the lower speeds. A recent trip to Brisbane and north at 100kph plus gave a very pleasant and comfortable ride.
If you are heading up this way give me a call and take a ride.

Hi again Will, as the Coopers were almost new I put on the D3 when I put the low profiles on the RR and what a huge difference they made to the D3.
They were quiet on the RR and are as quiet on the D3, they have improved the handling and even though the steering on the D3 is lighter than the RR, the Coopers have made the D3 steering even lighter.
My wife is wrapped and so am I.
I’ll see how the Michelin go on the RR, so far I haven’t done 100 kms so no idea but if they don’t come up to expectation I won’t hesitate to go back to the Coopers but at this time they don’t have a low profile to fit the 19” rims.
Cheers.
Will

Good to hear that you are satisfied with the Cooper ST performance. Mine are performing really well on the 'blacktop' and we find that the hum that is associated with them is acceptable at low speeds and not noticeable at higher speeds.
I wonder if the noise will become even less as the tyres begin to wear.
An interesting observation is that I think that fuel consumption has not been affected by the more aggressive tread pattern.
Trip computer shows 11.6 for travel in and around the Gold Coast with all the stops and starts.
Interested to know how this compares with others for city driving.

Just reading through the last couple of posts there and noted that Tim has H/Ts not S/Ts like yourself Will, in other words one tyre is a road biased tyre ie the H/T and the S/T is more an off road biased tyre. On the S/T though what size rim do you have,

Hi stevo, it’s not so much the type of tyres, H/T v S/T but whether the Coopers were any good on the D3.
The H/ts suite me more as I’m not planning on doing any extreme off roading but I still wanted to know if the Coopers are as good on road, on D3s as they are on the RR.
Mine you, I think anything is better than the Wranglers or Pirellis.
Thanks to Will’s input, instead of keeping the Coopers as spares, I put them on the D3 and I’m impressed and very pleased.
Cheers.

I was fortunate enough to do an exchange of my 18" down to 17" rims so that I had a better choice of tyres. The D3 will get as much use outback as the TDi did, so really needed the 17's.
Am waiting patiently for the TJM bullbar to become available so I can fit the winch from the old Disco. Then another patient wait for the HR tow bar.
Love the truck!!

Yep, the D3 is a huge leap forward from my D1 and D2.

Thats the one bummer with the V8, 18's are the minimum I can go to. The current General Grabbers I have are a huge leap over the HP's, but still too low a profile tyre in some circumstances. Hence looking at either S/T's, Mickey Thompson MTZ's and waiting to hear back from BFG on their new range of M/T's for 18inch tyres to see if one will suit mine.
