Am I imagining this, or could I have read somewhere that on a Defender (110) Td5 it's possible to fit a second (extra) fuel filter, for the purpose of giving added protection from nasty poor-quality diesel fuel that one can come across in certain parts of the world?

nope you can do it but theres not a lot of point on a TD5 due to the cost and how well the existing filter (assuming your using a genuine spec filter) works. AS the entire fuel system is pressureised to about 45-60psi you need to used pressurised filters and fittings
