Any comments or experience would be appreciated.

got one in big red, or near enough to it and Im pleased as with it...
just need to replace the whips after a bird strike.....
I originally had it fitted to kermit when I drove him from sydney to townsville when he caught fire, was glad for the AM side of business then as I was close enough to get contact in town and get someone out to help me back onto the road. (id kinda paniced and put him into a ditch as part of the oh crap theres black smoke pouring out of the hood and flames as well thing) It was about the only thing still working..

Thanks Dave,
I have been doing some research into them and they sound pretty good. Of course the blokes in town selling them 'swear by them' but I wasn't prepared to believe that. I do know one bloke with one, discovered this yesterday, and he is very happy with the unit.
Fire hey - olmate had smoke pouring out from the bonnet on Friday arvo after a service. After a mild heart attack thinking 'she was going up in flames' I discovered the elec fuel pump was the problem - needless to say, the old mechanical one is back on now. I got away scott free as I only lost the wiring to the pump itself.

I had the rubber grommet collaps into the firewall and all the wires to the dash module chaffed through shorted and burnt..
I got lucky as I had 2 extinguishers on hand.

Dave, sounds like you had your work cut out for you for a while.
Disco Steve. Let me know how things go once you test the unit.

Hi,
If you haven't already bought one have a search for 'alinco' on ebay. I picked up a dual band DR-620 radio with remoteable head for $420. Runs up to 35w on UHF & 50w on VHF!
You can set them up to listen to 2 channels at once (one VHF & one UHF if you want) or scan a number of channels. I've got mine programmed with RFS UHF command channels & VHF fireground for my fire service command work as well as CB, police, ambulance, etc
Very handy bit of kit with a dual band antenna for about $35 extra
Cheers

I highly recommend the ICOM IC-208H.
Its a dual band radio, 55w on VHF and 50w on UHF.
Massive RX range and with a very simple mod will RX/TX on UHF CB at least 50w if needed. Comes with remote head and cable. I can provide details of the mod if needed and suppliers for the below price.
Retails for $399 in Australia.

Looking at the specs, this does 2m and 70cm. What are those frequencies used for here? Will the 70cm band go up high enough to give the UHF CB frequencies?
I was originally assuming people meant 27MHz and 477MHz when they spoke of dual band, but now I'm beginning to think not...especially as 2m is 144MHz.

Both the 2m and 70cm bands are for amateur use.
With the mod, it works happily on UHF CB freqs and VHF commercial freqs. Disclaimer: its illegal to use more than 5w on CB (believe it or not, even the CB repeaters are limited to 5w:eek:)
I have access to a network of linked 50 watt VHF repeaters through my work which makes it very useful for long range communication on the east coast. Its also great for police and emergency service RX - in QLD nothing is encyrpted outide the Brisbane metropolitan area.

Hi Mark
Was looking at the Icom 208H, 2720 (Have one already) and the new 2820H. It appears mine with mod will not hit the tx CB but very keen on your comments so I take it your using a CB cut antenna or pushing the 477 through the ham ant. Any further advice as this will save having two radios, Geoff

Folks
Just bought a 208H from Prestige Communications for $399 delivered courier to door and out of the box has the mod for extended Rx Tx so does the UHF CB and easily puts the full power into 477 area.
The mod is the removal of two resistors. Only did power tests and receive sensitivity appears to be up to standard from the local repeaters. Forgot about the swearing and idiots but they were good value for received checks.
So for you hams like I, I found you can just use medium power to keep swr within range on standard duel bander. I found 1.8:1 at medium a dedicated 477 cut will be just that much better if you only need the CB for the day, cheers Geoff

The uh095sx you have is not a UHF and VHF, its a UHF and HF. Ie 477mhz and 27mhz
UHF and AM.....

Geoff,
How/where did you mount the unit, remote head and mic?

Guys, you're talking about different things.
Troy's researching the dual band CB (477MHz UHF CB and 27Mhz - actually HF not VHF Troy;)) whereas the other 2 radios mentioned are dual band VHF/UHF amateur radios. (144MHz and 433Mhz bands)
I realise they can be "adjusted" to use CB 477Mhz but they won't work on 27Mhz.
Don't know much about the CB Troy but they sound like a great idea for remving clutter in the cabin. (and legal too ;))

You may remove the clutter but you'll be adding some chatter. With all the morons talking about the prowess of their genitals on CB, I think I'd rather have the clutter! :( :( :(

I went with two radios both gme one UHF the other 27mhz am/ssb/upper and lower good for local and long range often pick up tassie and northern Q/land from sydney. If your going real bush you may need HF for RFDS.

Don't see the connection:confused: Isn't a dual band radio just like 2 radios in one? Ie you can mute 27mhz if the genitaliorising is getting too much
27Mhz is there for those trips where someone else has 27mhz but not UHF (Although I think most 4wders would have UHF now!)
By clutter I meant only one microphone and speaker, etc. (obvioulsy you still need 2 different antennas)
Maybe I missed your point.

Yes you completely missed the joke. :(
If you turn on either band of CB radio particularly in Metro areas, all you seem to get is chatter from what can only be described as morons, in the intelligence quotient sense, uttering mindless banter most of which relates to their genitalia or animalesque noises.
I agree with having dual band CB radios, I have one in my RRc. Along with the Codan HF.

Yeah mine usually stays off (Take the antennas off too) when around town - Total waste of time. Ham radio is much more friendly for around town nattering. (VHF/UHF/HF) - <<another blatent plug for amateur radio - get on board it's easy now - vk3gps!>>
