View Full Version : The Shame of Getting Bogged

Well today I got my D2 so badly bogged I had to pay a towie to recover me..:o
I was driving a track leading into a property that I had driven only about a week ago. What basically happened was at 50 meters in ( the track being very rutted slight rise and wet ) I slid into the ruts. In the ruts it was like slush and clay. I slowed and she started to bog down I instantly stopped and tried to reverse and to my shock nothing. Engaged CDL kept trying and things only got worse as I could feel the car sinking. Got out and collected as much small timber under the wheels. By them I could tell I was not going to get her out as the wheels were in the ruts which was just slush and the diffs looked like they were on the ground. You know the sort of bog I am talking about.
Fathers day Sunday arvo after trying to get hold of friends with a 4wd the last resort was to call a tow. Lucky the truck on firm ground got 30 meters up the track and his cable was at least 20 meters. The shame.:(
It honestly did not look that bad and as mentioned above I drove the same track into this property a week ago with only a bit of wheel spin.
It did not help that I was by myself and my A/T's are due to be replaced. However it was only a friends farm, that was not home and I was not far from town.

This experience has got me thinking about a thread a while back " lockers or winch first". If I had lockers I might have got myself further into trouble. It made my choice easy a winch is on the list before lockers.

First on my list then would be taller tyres but a winch might have got you there as long as there was something to winch from.
I would have locked the CDL before going in there and if the ruts were that deep I would have had a look first but thats just me, it's not mandatory.

Yep right about the CDL that's the first mistake I made. Thing was ruts did not look that deep, it was like once the surface was broken by the weight of the car it just sunk, caught me by surprise. I'll put it down as good experience bit of a learning curve. No damage done except to my bank account paying for the tow.

I did that 2months ago. After the rains I went for a drive in our dam. 1st mistake.
Then after not making it out over the the wall, I backed into a water table waste deep:wallbash:
It took me 4hrs to get out.

Jack and pack - then jack and pack again - and maybe a third time - and then drive out - well most of the time - if not jack and pack again and again until you are out.
(jack = jack the car ; pack = pack under the wheels (0n top of the pack - car floor mats are good interim sand mats)
Basically lift the car clear of obstructions and the bog.

Went out with my bro in my newly aquired series 2A 1 week ownership, drove along a wet track did not know skidder was bogged there 1 week earlier:D, no recovery :ogear, no phone:o , no shovel:o. 3 hr walk for borrowed shovel:angel: and 1 hour with wood and bottle jack later.
Now I leave home with everything including the kitchen sink;) for coffee cup washing:D. 9500 pound winch, high lift, shovel, snatchum u know the rest.
PS fully charged phone:D:D and old 35mm camera in the glovebox at all times.
Must say it was a huge learning curve.:p

Sounds exactly how I buried my D2 a few weeks ago.
With the CDL unlocked and hi range the TC will burry you before you realise there is a traction problem!!!!!.

Golden rule mate.... If its MOVING... Don't stop!
No matter how slow she goes, if she's going; you keep going ;) only button off once stationary.
And yes, as you may have gathered... CDL in first would have been a good idea
Glad to hear you sorted it though! All part of the learning curve.

I've done that. Was following a guy with 35 muds. He cruised through. I slid to a halt in the middle of a wet clay puddle. all 4 wheels happily turning with the engine just iddling. I even got out with it still in gear to look. After the pulled me out you could see the shape of my diffs in the clay.
